Kalbach: Hiking Trails, Rhön Views and Culture

Kalbach combines hiking and cycling trails with viewpoints and a cultural meeting place in Heubach. Different themes can shape your stay: a longer circular hike, signposted trails, a long-distance cycle route or the Rhön landscape.

Hiking and Cycling with Different Highlights

The Haubentour premium hiking trail is a 20-kilometre circular route around Heubach. Nearby, it follows the Hesse-Bavaria state border along field and meadow paths to the observation tower on the Mottener Haube. The Hotel and Restaurant Zum Taufstein or the Landgasthof Rhönsicht are recommended as starting and finishing points. Check the current trail markings before setting out.

The Antoniuseiche hiking car park in Nieder- and Mittelkalbach provides access to numerous signposted hiking trails, which can also be used for cycling. In total, more than 200 kilometres of hiking trails run through the municipality of Kalbach and into the neighbouring districts. The Rhön-Rundweg 2 Antoniuseiche passes through woodland and meadows west of Niederkalbach. In April 2026, the numbering and signposting of this trail were changed; follow the trail markers on site.

For a cycling trip, the Hessian long-distance cycle route R2 is another option: it runs from Uttrichshausen to Heubach, the highest-lying district of the municipality of Kalbach. The routes mentioned therefore differ not only in length but also in character: the Haubentour is a circular hike, the R2 connects two districts, and signposted trails that cyclists can also use start at the Antoniuseiche hiking car park.

Border Location and Views across the Rhön

The Große Haube lies on the border between Heubach in Hesse and Motten in Bavaria. At 658 metres, it is the highest point in the municipality of Kalbach. Its observation tower offers panoramic views across the Rhön and the Fulda region. Nearby, south of Heubach, the observation tower on the Mottener Haube offers, on a clear day, a panoramic view of the Dammersfeld massif and the Hessian Rhön.

The location of the districts also helps orient visitors: Heubach and Uttrichshausen form the western boundary of the Hessian Rhön Nature Park. Since 2019, Eichenrieder Weitblick has been part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve’s Star Park. Distinctive landscape boundaries, sweeping panoramic views and the area’s inclusion in a Star Park thus offer different starting points for planning your outing.

Culture in Heubach

Since its renovation was completed in spring 2006, the former rural synagogue in Heubach has been used as a cultural meeting place. It offers another way to combine your stay with a cultural theme alongside hiking and cycling trips. Together with the trails and viewpoints, it provides a wide range of options from which to choose the focus of your trip, without having to plan every day in the same way.
