Discover Hofbieber: Cycling Routes, the Rhön and Culture
Accommodation in Hofbieber
Hofbieber lies amid the gentle hills and forests of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. You can explore the landscape along a cycling route that follows a former railway line, as well as on the Rhön circular trails. Art, history and unique nature experiences complete the picture and offer various ideas for planning your trip.
Cycling and Hiking in Hofbieber
The Milseburg Cycle Route follows the track of the former Rhön Railway through Hofbieber to Hilders and is 27 kilometres long in total. The Rhön circular trails in Hofbieber have a different focus: the 17 routes bring together nature, culture and history. They are offered by the Municipality of Hofbieber and the Hessian Rhön Nature Park, are well marked, and have well-maintained rest areas and car parks, as well as educational trails. Check the conditions on the individual trails before setting out.
This gives you different ways to enjoy the outdoors: a cycling route with a stated total distance, or circular trails that combine themes of nature, culture and history. The approximately one-kilometre-long Hofbieber Star Trail adds a discovery walk of its own. It leads from the car park for the barefoot adventure trail to the barefoot trail; ten information boards feature quiz questions, activities or games for children.
Art, History and Special Places in the Municipality
In Kleinsassen, which is part of the Municipality of Hofbieber, exhibitions at the Kunststation feature works from a range of artistic movements. These often include works by internationally renowned artists. In addition to its regular exhibitions, the venue regularly hosts concerts, readings and talks. Also in Kleinsassen, the Pfunds Museum explores weights, units, weighing and measures from the past 5,000 years: more than 10,000 exhibits are displayed across seven rooms and two floors, covering a total of 250 square metres.
Milseburg is 835 metres high, has a distinctive trapezoidal shape, lies in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and offers panoramic views. A prehistoric hiking trail with the remains of ramparts and walls from several fortifications leads up the mountain. The oldest remains are from a Celtic hillfort dating to the first century BC. The Milseburg Hut also serves regional, traditional cuisine made with high-quality produce.
The Wallingsmühle mill also brings history to life: its historic milling equipment has been fully preserved. A guided tour lasting one to one and a half hours shows how grain is ground into flour using water power alone. For a different kind of landscape experience, visit the “Freddy and the Green Belt” adventure station above the districts of Obernüst and Boxberg. It connects the history of Germany’s division with the nature of the Green Belt. On site, there is a weatherproof outdoor book, a sky swing and an interactive photo point; the station invites families, hikers and nature lovers to explore.
In Hofbieber-Danzwiesen, the Milseburg Sky Viewing Site features a rotating wave-shaped lounger, binocular attachments, a movable star chart and a Pole Star finder. The municipal area’s Bieberstein open-air swimming pool is fed by spring water and offers a view of Bieberstein Castle. The 1,172-metre-long Milseburg Tunnel is on the Milseburg Cycle Route.
Fulda as a Wider Setting for the Rhön
In the wider destination of Fulda, the Rhön in Fulda district offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. Wasserkuppe is the highest mountain in Hesse and one of the district’s most distinctive places. The work of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve also enriches the region’s educational landscape. This includes junior and senior ranger programmes, certification for biosphere schools and daycare centres, and hundreds of events each year, including nature and adventure tours and markets. These regional offerings provide a broader context; they should not be confused with individual experiences in Hofbieber.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip
