Discover Lohfelden
Accommodation in Lohfelden
Discover Lohfelden through its cultural history and trails: the “Cultural History” Eco Path connects historic sites dating from the Late Bronze Age to the mid-20th century. The route is about 13 kilometres long; allow around three hours of actual walking time for the full hike. If you would like to split up the route, you can also walk it in two stages, with suggested shortcuts.
Hiking trails with different themes
The “Following the Path of Life” Impulse Trail is an approximately 4.5-kilometre circular route that is fully accessible and has ten stations. The path along the Lohfelden side of Lindenberg is also accessible and can be travelled on foot, by bicycle, with a pushchair or with a walker. For a different kind of exercise, try the marked running route from the town hall to the “Green Centre” and back: it is five kilometres long.
The 14-kilometre “Baddschensteig” is a cultural-history hiking trail that runs around Lohfelden-Vollmarshausen along the boundaries of the local district. It starts at the village lime tree in the centre of the village. In the Middle Ages, court hearings were held at this ancient assembly site, marked by its distinctive stone table. As you plan your day, the trail also offers the chance to visit a historic site right on a hiking route.
Local history, art and culture
Four information boards tell the story of the former “Söhrebahn” railway line. They are located on Waldauer Weg at the junction with the swimming pool access road, at the “Old Ochshausen Station”, on Lange Straße at the junction with Berliner Straße, and at the “Old Vollmarshausen Station”. The stops are spread across several parts of Lohfelden and focus on the former railway connection.
The Chess Museum is on the second floor of the Old School in Ochshausen. Its chess collection includes exhibits from different periods dating back to the 12th century, as well as items from different countries and cultures. Parts of “Chess Picture Worlds” by Bernd Besser, the Lohfelden-based graphic artist and artist, are also on display there. If you are interested in architecture and local history, Crumbach Church offers another point of interest: its present form dates from 1770, while the much older tower is believed to have belonged to an old fortified church from the 13th century.
The “Craft, Half-Timbering, Artwork” audio walk takes you through the historic centre of Lohfelden-Crumbach and starts at the old Crumbach Church with its fortified tower. As this is a digital offering, it is best to check that it is available before your trip. The town hall also offers changing cultural experiences: two exhibitions on different themes and featuring different artworks are held there each year, and visitors can attend the opening of each exhibition.
Green spaces, play and exercise
“Lohfelden’s Green Centre” lies between Crumbach, Ochshausen and Vollmarshausen. This local recreation area offers spaces to relax, play and take part in sports, play areas for young children, a sensory trail, a fitness circuit and the “Dancing Oak” viewing platform. The area brings together different ways to spend time outdoors, from play to sports and exercise.
The approximately 9,600-square-metre Vorsterpark was established as a public park in 1970/1971 and offers opportunities for relaxation, sports and play. It is also home to a sculpture inspired by the fairy tale “The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was”. Since 2004, the municipality of Lohfelden has been part of the “Fairy Tale Trail” in the district of Kassel. Another themed trail is dedicated to the “Trees of the Year”: Lohfelden has taken part in the initiative since 2006. Each tree has a large boulder with its name carved into it and picked out in colour; you can also explore the trees via a hiking trail.
Lohfelden’s outdoor swimming pool has one- and three-metre diving platforms, a wide-wave slide, children’s and baby pools, a large play and sunbathing lawn, mini golf and beach volleyball. The pool’s opening dates and operations are seasonal and may change; check the current arrangements before visiting. An 18-hole mini-golf course with a varied layout is also located right by the pool and is run by an active mini-golf club. Operations may also vary seasonally here, so check with the operator in advance.
Art trails and planning your trip
The Lohfelden section of ARS NATURA starts on Spangenberger Pfad at the corner of “Am Alten Teich” in Lohfelden-Crumbach, near the church. A marked access route to the Grimmsteig starts at Lohfelden’s Löwenhof, at Bachstraße 36. It follows “Spangenberger Pfad” (X3, Wildbahn), passing artworks by ARS NATURA, to the Herchenbach hiking car park at the Crumbach shelter. Please note: the Grimmsteig itself does not run through Lohfelden; the route in Lohfelden is an access route to it.
When choosing a stay in Lohfelden, you can prioritise the things that interest you: cultural-history trails and local history sit alongside exhibitions, art and green spaces with play and sports facilities. This lets you plan your trip around the things you most want to discover.
