Vellmar combines green spaces for relaxation with trails that tell stories and offer glimpses into the past. At Ahnepark, diverse plantings meet sculptures and a miniature steam railway; elsewhere, the Märchenlandweg and the Eco Pfad Ahne explore different themes.

Green Spaces and Activities

Ahnepark has seven entrances and exits, a restroom facility, a café-restaurant, and parking areas near the entrances. Its green spaces are defined by a diverse landscape of trees, shrubs, and flowers. Particularly old trees were preserved when the park was created. There are also numerous sculptures, created on site over the years during various international sculpture symposia. Landscape and art are thus equally part of the park’s character.

The Vellmar Steam Railway Club’s miniature railway is also located in Ahnepark. Visitors can experience it during the summer months; on operating days, rides on the miniature train are available. Since it runs only on these days, it is worth checking the latest operating information before your visit.

The Obervellmar outdoor swimming pool has a 50-meter pool with swimming and non-swimming areas, as well as a children’s adventure paddling pool. Both pools are surrounded by large lawns that invite you to sunbathe. A beach volleyball court and a table tennis table round out the facilities. The outdoor pool is seasonal, so check its current opening dates before visiting. If you’d rather get around by bike or skateboard, Vellmar Skate ’n’ Bike Park offers plenty of options.

Trails and Stories

The Märchenlandweg runs right through Vellmar and continues to the city of Kassel. Information boards along the trail provide information about legends and the past. The Eco Pfad Ahne has a different focus: this intermunicipal trail connects Ahnatal and Vellmar and is about nine kilometers long. One starting point is the Vellmar-Niedervellmar, Friedhof (Weideweg) stop. If you use this information for planning, check current transport connections before setting out.

The two trails can be distinguished by their stated themes: legends and the past are at the heart of the Märchenlandweg, while the Eco Pfad Ahne connects the two municipalities. You can make a similar choice when planning your day: would you like to learn about stories along the way, or make the longer intermunicipal trail the main focus? The approximate length of the Eco Pfad helps you gauge the scope of the outing without assuming a particular walking time.

A Glimpse into Vellmar’s History

In Frommershausen stands a church considered Vellmar’s oldest surviving building, dating from the 13th century. The Hof Helse Museum focuses on a different kind of history, offering insights into the everyday lives of past generations. Together with the sculptures in Ahnepark, these places offer different ways to experience Vellmar’s culture—from a surviving historic building and past ways of life to public art.

As you plan your days in Vellmar, you can combine these themes with the different options for activity and relaxation: parkland and the miniature railway, the seasonal outdoor pool, skateboarding or cycling, and trails with their individual focuses. You can choose accommodation based on what you especially want to discover during your stay, without all your activities needing to share the same focus.
