Kassel: Fairy Tales, Forests and Trails
Accommodation in Kassel
In the district of Kassel, you can shape your trip around fairy-tale themes, wildlife observation and active exploration. The German Fairy Tale Route runs through the district, passing, among other places, Sababurg Castle, the Sleeping Beauty castle, and Trendelburg Castle with its Rapunzel Tower. The area also features extensive woodland, themed trails and cultural attractions. If you are planning together, it helps to decide first whether cultural sites, wildlife watching or active days in the countryside should define your stay.
Fairy-Tale Themes, Castles and Wildlife Watching
Trendelburg Castle has a 38-metre-high keep and is surrounded by a moat and castle wall. Along the German Fairy Tale Route, you can also experience fairy tales at open-air theatres, as puppet shows or in a museum steeped in history. This offers a range of cultural experiences side by side: the castle as a real-life fairy-tale setting, and stories presented on stage or in a museum.
Sababurg Animal Park offers a different kind of experience. It covers 130 hectares and is home to 80 animal species, with more than 900 animals; population figures may change as the park operates. The animal park museum offers insights into the parkâs history and daily life, as well as the animal species found there. The animal park is open daily throughout the year. Nevertheless, check opening hours before setting out.
Forests, Open Countryside and Trails
Habichtswald Nature Park is characterised by extensive beech forests and numerous volcanic basalt peaks; it is a destination for nature lovers, hikers, winter sports enthusiasts and anyone seeking relaxation. Reinhardswald Nature Park brings together centuries-old pollarded oaks, extensive beech and spruce forests, river valleys, natural stream landscapes, and limestone grasslands with juniper and orchids. In Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land, deep forests alternate with meadows and fields; the area also has colourful mountain meadows and trout streams. Together, these landscapes showcase different features of woodland, open land and waterways.
If you enjoy learning about history while hiking, the Eco Paths offer a dedicated way to explore. In Reinhardswald and Habichtswald, they lead you on historical trails through the landscape. The Eco Paths in the district of Kassel also let you discover archaeological sites, castles and palaces. The trails have no opening hours and can be explored independently at any time of day; conditions may vary from one trail to another. In Reinhardswald Nature Park, excursions through the landscape are also offered as part of the âNature Experiencesâ programme.
Get Active: Audio Tours and Cycling Routes
The 15 audio tours in the âHörâ mal!â programme in the district of Kassel offer another way to explore the area. They follow set routes with stops and viewpoints. Unlike the Eco Paths, which you can explore independently, the audio tours follow a fixed route.
Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land offers opportunities for gliding and hang-gliding, water sports, winter sports, cycling, horse riding and fishing. Twenty-four premium trails have been created there in recent years. Two routes are also listed for cycling holidays: the KasselâEdersee Cycle Route runs through the districts of Kassel and Waldeck-Frankenberg; the Fulda Cycle Route R1 is designated as a tourist cycling route in the district of Kassel. Check current route conditions before setting out on a specific tour.
