Discover Löhnberg: Laneburg, Sauerborn and Kallenbachtal
Accommodation in Löhnberg
Löhnberg offers different ways to explore its history and landscape: Laneburg Castle and a significant coin hoard give the town a distinctive historical character. Trails in the Kallenbachtal, the Sauerborn spring and activities on the Lahn appeal to travellers who prefer spending their time outdoors. There is also a water museum and a listed farmstead. This lets you tailor your stay to the interests of your fellow travellers, rather than focusing on just one kind of discovery.
Laneburg Castle and the coin hoard
Laneburg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1324. It was expanded in the style of a palace during the 16th and early 17th centuries, and briefly served as a secondary residence of Nassau-Dillenburg. These milestones give the castle a history spanning several centuries and shape Löhnberg’s historical character.
The Löhnberg coin hoard tells another remarkable story: it consists of 2,011 silver coins and was discovered in 2000 during renovation work at Laneburg Castle. The hoard is considered a valuable part of the cultural heritage. Since 2010, it has been on permanent display in the business premises of the Kreissparkasse Weilburg in Löhnberg. The castle and the find thus represent different aspects of the town’s history: the development of a building on the one hand, and a specific silver find on the other.
Water, architectural history and landscape
More recent buildings, or those put to different uses, also tell stories about Löhnberg. The multi-generational centre is housed in a listed quadrangle farmstead built in 1905. Since 2017, the Löhnberg Water Museum has been a Geopoint of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark. Together with the natural mineral spring Sauerborn, it highlights another theme of the town: here, water can be explored both as part of the landscape and from a geological perspective.
The Sauerborn spring lies directly on the long-distance cycle route R7. In 2018, the mineral spring was named Geotope of the Year by the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark. For a different view of the surroundings, there is the 18-metre-high Löhnberg observation tower: its four viewing platforms offer views across the entire Lahn and Kallenbach valleys. Its height and multiple platforms make the tower a landscape attraction in its own right, alongside the historic buildings.
Trails, cycling and time on the water
Trails in the Kallenbachtal near Löhnberg invite you to hike and cycle. Boating on the Lahn is another leisure activity in Löhnberg. This gives you different options when planning your time: you can focus your stay on trails and cycling, or include time on the water. Löhnberg also has a rail connection; for your specific journey, it is worth checking the connections for your travel dates.
Plan your stay around your interests
When choosing accommodation, you can start by considering which themes you want your stay to revolve around. If you are interested in local history, Laneburg Castle and the coin hoard offer a clear focus. Those who prefer nature and geology can explore the Sauerborn spring, the water museum and the observation tower. For active days, the trails in the Kallenbachtal, long-distance cycle route R7 and boating on the Lahn are good options to plan around. If you are travelling with children, the combination of castle history, the coin find and outdoor activities can help you include different interests in your plans. The options mentioned do not all have to feature on the same day of your holiday: you can decide what takes priority for your trip—culture, activity or water.
