Elz combines the history of its town center with cycling and hiking trails, public art and notable church works. The Historic Walking Tour leads to older preserved buildings in the town center. Along the way, it gives visitors an impression of what Elz once looked like, with its intact rows of old houses. If you are looking for accommodation for a trip to Elz, you can start by considering whether local history, cycling or a walk will be the focus of your visit.

Local History and Guided Tours

The Historic Walking Tour focuses on the older buildings in the town center while also drawing attention to an earlier townscape: Elz as it once looked, with continuous, intact rows of houses. So the tour is not just about an individual building, but also evokes a historic streetscape. This gives local history a tangible connection to the preserved houses along the route.

For a deeper look, the Elz History and Museum Association offers special guided tours by appointment. Topics include the Baroque altars of the Hadamar School, the Celtic burial ground in Elz Forest and the exhibitions at Haus Loer. If you would like to include one of these tours in your travel plans, arrange a time with the association in advance.

The Haus Loer Local History Museum was restored in 1988/91 and showcases the history of Elz as well as numerous temporary exhibitions. The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist houses Baroque altars from Limburg Cathedral. The church also contains works by the Hadamar School, probably by Volk, dating to around 1748. These works offer a distinct focus alongside the tours and exhibitions on local history.

Art, Cycling Routes and a Walk

Two different sculptures stand in the forecourt of the Elz Backes: “The Singing Girl” and “The Waving Girls.” They symbolize the diverse activities of local clubs and express the village’s musical tradition. Together with the historic buildings and church artworks, they showcase different aspects of local cultural life.

There are also several options for cycling trips. Elz has its own signposted network of cycling and hiking trails. The Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R8 runs through Elz along the Elbbach; the Nassau-Wäller Cycle Loop also passes through the town and is about 58 kilometers long in total. On the R8, you can follow its route through Elz along the Elbbach; on the Nassau-Wäller Cycle Loop, you can use its approximate total length of 58 kilometers as a guide. These features can help you choose your route.

Another trail leads from Malmeneich along the Hasslerbach to Pfaffenkopf in about twenty minutes. The destination is an earthen mound that was once a lowland castle. This gives you several different options to plan around: the historic town center, a longer cycling loop or a walk with a specific destination.

More Cultural Attractions in the Broader Limburg-Weilburg Travel Destination

The broader Limburg-Weilburg travel destination has other cultural attractions with a different focus. In Weilburg, the Rosenhang Museum was established in the former August Helbig brewery. It presents contemporary art in changing exhibitions across around 2,000 square meters; studios are also available for artists.

In Runkel, the medieval castle defines the townscape. It was first mentioned in 1159. The historic Lahn Bridge in Runkel also offers its own connection to the past: it dates from 1448 and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn preserved in its original condition. Art in a former brewery and buildings with medieval histories thus provide other highlights in the broader Limburg-Weilburg travel destination.
