Runkel: Castle, Half-Timbered Houses and Trails Along the Lahn
Accommodation in Runkel
Runkel combines a medieval castle, half-timbered houses in the historic old town and trails for cycling and hiking. This gives your stay several possible focuses: architectural history and townscape, longer routes or nature. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth first considering which of these sides of Runkel you want to shape your itinerary.
Castle, Old Town and Architectural History
Runkel Castle was first mentioned in 1159. Together with the half-timbered houses, it defines the historic character of the town. The old town is ideal for a stroll, with its lanes and distinctive historic townscape taking centre stage. Those interested in architectural history will find other places to visit beyond the castle: Schadeck Castle stands opposite Runkel Castle on the far side of the Lahn. It was first mentioned in a document in 1288.
The historic Lahn Bridge in Runkel is also part of the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination. Dating from 1448, it is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn to have been preserved in its original condition. The bridge adds another chapter to the local architectural history alongside the medieval castle and Schadeck Castle.
The Hofen Mill tells a different story: this listed monument has a fully preserved grain mill and a hydroelectric power station, both of which can be visited. Here, the focus is not on fortifications or the townscape, but on milling technology and the use of hydropower. This makes it possible to combine different themes during a stay, without every historic site telling the same story.
Cycling and Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
For cyclists, both the Lahn Cycle Route and the R 7 long-distance cycle route pass through the historic old town. The Kerkerbach Railway routes offer a different setting: the trail is around 30 kilometres long, runs from Runkel to Mengerskirchen and is now used for cycling and hiking from the Lahn into the Westerwald. If you are comparing tours, you can choose between routes through the old town and a longer connection towards the Westerwald.
The hiking trails also offer different points of reference. The permanent hiking trail “In the Steep Slopes of the Lahn” is twelve kilometres long and starts and ends at the Altstadt Café in Runkel. It can be hiked all year round; however, in winter the route is neither gritted nor cleared. When planning, bear in mind the twelve-kilometre distance and that the trail is not cleared or gritted in winter.
Runkel is also a railway station on the Gießen–Koblenz line. If you plan to arrive by train, check the timetable for your travel date. Together with the question of whether you want to focus mainly on the old town, cycling routes or hiking trails, this gives you a practical guide to choosing accommodation.
Dehrn: Chapel, Castle and Advent
The Runkel district of Dehrn also has its own architectural landmark: Dehrn Castle is considered its defining landmark and shapes the townscape. Below the castle stands the restored and renovated 12th-century Chapel of St. Nicholas. The St. Nicholas Market takes place every year during Advent around the chapel; the exact date varies from year to year. If you would like to combine your visit with the market, plan around the date of the event for that year.
The chapel and the castle show that Runkel’s historic sites are not limited to the old town. Each offers a different focus, without implying a particular route or day plan.
Protected Nature Around Runkel
In the “Wehrley von Runkel” nature reserve, rare plants, fern species and moss flora are specially protected, as are botanical, geological and ornithological features. This protected natural area adds another perspective on the surroundings to the buildings and trails. If you would like to consider nature as well as culture when planning your trip, you can include this focus in your research.
