Mengerskirchen combines a walled town complex, museum exhibits from different periods and cycling routes in the Westerwald. The castle, tower museum and parish church tell stories from different eras, while the cycling routes offer a focus of their own. You can plan your stay according to whether you are more interested in architectural history, collection pieces or cycling tours.

Castle and Tower Museum

Built between 1321 and 1341, Mengerskirchen Castle is the centrepiece of the walled town complex. A remnant of its own enclosing wall, with the gateway and half-tower, has been preserved. These features give the castle complex a tangible historical character: in addition to the central building, part of its fortifications can also be identified.

The oldest part of the castle houses the Tower Museum, in a medieval residential and defensive tower commissioned by Count Johann of Nassau-Dillenburg in 1320. The museum opened in 1990. The tower dates from the 14th century, and its vine-scroll paintings, executed in the lime secco technique, date from 1523. Castle history and painting come together here in a single building.

The exhibits also span different periods. Among the oldest are Celtic storage vessels dating from around 500 BC. Fragments of 17th-century architectural painting can also be seen in the entrance hall of the Tower Museum. Taking time to look closely lets you see early vessel finds and later wall paintings as distinct pieces from the collection.

Church History and Cycling Routes

St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church stands on the site of a church first mentioned in 1313. This historical reference adds another point of interest to the town’s history alongside the castle and museum. Together with the walled complex, it highlights buildings whose histories span several centuries.

If you prefer exploring by bike, Mengerskirchen offers two different route options. The 32-kilometre “Around the Knot” circular cycling route loops around Mengerskirchen and passes through the Westerwald’s upland landscape. On long-distance cycle route R8, the section directly by Seeweiher lake is the notable feature. When choosing your rides, you can distinguish between a signposted loop through the Westerwald landscape and the section of R8 by Seeweiher lake.

These interests can also guide your choice of accommodation. First consider whether you want to devote your stay primarily to historic buildings and museum exhibits or to cycling tours.

More to Discover in Limburg-Weilburg

In the Limburg-Weilburg travel region, Runkel offers its own historical highlights: its medieval castle was first mentioned in 1159. The historic Lahn Bridge dates from 1448 and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn to have been preserved in its original condition. Hiking and cycling routes also define the area: the Lahn Hiking Trail and the permanent hiking trails “In the Steep Slopes of the Lahn” and “Through the Kerkerbach Valley” pass through Runkel; the Lahn Cycle Route and the Kerkerbach Valley Cycle Route also invite visitors to explore by bike. This offers a different perspective on the town and its routes from Mengerskirchen’s castle and tower history.
