Weilmünster lies in the Weiltal valley between the Lahn and the Taunus. The town combines trails along the Weil with a historic centre, regional markets and a long cider-making tradition. There are several different ways to enjoy a stay: outdoor activities in the valley, views and local history, seasonal events, and local produce. Weilmünster is a starting point for activities and excursions on foot, by car or by bicycle.

Weiltal trails and seasonal experiences

The 47.5-kilometre Weiltal Trail runs along the Weil, passes through Weilmünster and ends in Weilburg on the Lahn. The Weiltal Cycle Route is another route between Weilmünster and Weilburg and follows an old railway line. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the Weiltal Trail, which follows the river, and the cycle route, which follows the railway line.

For cycling trips, there is also the seasonal Weiltal bus: it runs from May to October on weekends and public holidays, carries a bicycle trailer and allows you to take your bicycle free of charge when crossing the Weiltal Trail. Check the current operating period before travelling, as seasonal service details may change.

During the recurring summer Car-Free Weiltal Sunday, the Weiltal road is closed to motorised traffic. Around 30 kilometres of the valley are then open for hiking, cycling and inline skating. The event takes place seasonally; check the date if you would like to plan your trip around it.

Kirberg Tower and market life

Kirberg Tower stands above the historic town centre and offers views in every direction. It dates from around 1600 and originally formed part of Weilmünster’s town fortifications. The tower therefore brings together a viewpoint and a tangible part of local history.

The markets offer a different focus. The Weilmünster Farmers’ Market showcases local producers and direct marketers from the region during the fair weekend. The Martinimarkt includes a large general market in the market square and streets, a flea market and an exhibition by amateur artists. Event dates may vary; check them in advance if you would like to visit a particular market.

Cider, regional cuisine and remembrance

The Heil cider press in Weilmünster-Laubuseschbach produces cider and fruit juices; its product range includes more than 60 products. The family’s cider production dates back to the mid-1940s. The Pastori also brings together several offerings: it combines a restaurant, hotel and club cinema, which is considered the oldest in Hesse. The restaurant’s seasonal menu includes regional dishes made with produce from local direct marketers. Check the restaurant’s offerings, menu and cinema programme before your visit.

The Weilmünster Book of Remembrance is also part of local history. It documents people who died at the institution between 1939 and 1945, as well as people who were transported via Weilmünster to the Hadamar killing centre. The memorial cemetery in Weilmünster was established in 2003 as a memorial to the victims of Nazi euthanasia. These places add a solemn note of remembrance to Weilmünster’s history, alongside its themes of outdoor activities, markets and local produce.
