Discover Erlensee: Nature, the Limes and history
Accommodation in Erlensee
Erlensee brings together nature reserves, traces of Roman times and historic sites in its districts. The annual Cultural Nights, featuring music, literature and live events, add to the mix. Whether you are particularly interested in nature, history or culture, these different themes can give your trip to Erlensee a distinct focus.
Nature and trails in Erlensee
Forty percent of Erlensee’s municipal area is designated as a nature reserve. Cycling and hiking trails pass through these areas, making it easy to include nature and outdoor activities in your travel plans. The water buffalo in the Weideswiesen are highlighted as an outstanding nature conservation project. The “Blühende Landschaften” (“Blooming Landscapes”) are also among the featured conservation projects; they were developed in recent years. Erlensee therefore puts both protected areas and specific nature conservation projects in the spotlight. If you enjoy spending your days outdoors, you will find a different starting point here than on a stay focused mainly on historic sites.
Roman times and local history
Erlensee has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Information boards and markers make the Limes visible and accessible to residents and visitors alike. The Roman bath in Rückingen also offers an introduction to Roman times and is one of the region’s oldest visible remains. In the same district, the medieval “Wasserburg” (moated castle) of the Lords of Rückingen recalls the Middle Ages; the “Schlösschen” (small castle) is another reminder of this historic past.
The Wasserburg dates from 1569 and houses a local history museum with finds from the Roman fort. The defensive towers in Langendiebach are also among Erlensee’s attractions. Together, these sites offer different starting points for a history-focused visit: from the Limes and finds from the Roman fort to medieval landmarks. The Wasserburg in Rückingen and the towers in Langendiebach are distinct destinations within Erlensee.
Culture, travel and choosing accommodation
The Erlensee Cultural Nights take place every year and feature music, literature and live events. They complement the nature and history themes with a recurring cultural programme. When choosing accommodation in Erlensee, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay: trails and nature reserves, historic attractions or the Cultural Nights.
There are also practical details to help you plan your journey: the A45 and A66 motorways connect directly to Erlensee. Hanau ICE station is about ten minutes from Erlensee. You can take both the road connections and Hanau ICE station into account when planning your trip.
More to explore in the Main-Kinzig district
Looking beyond Erlensee, the Main-Kinzig district offers other distinct landscapes and cultural attractions. The orchard meadow area stretching from Bergen-Enkheim to Maintal-Hochstadt covers around 320 hectares. Some of its sunny slopes are protected; in spring, flowering trees and colourful meadows invite you to go for walks and excursions. The Kinzig rises in the northeast of the Main-Kinzig district near Sinntal-Sterbfritz and flows into the Main at Hanau.
In Gelnhausen, the museum in the former Augustaschule on Obermarkt is designed as an interactive family museum. Children and adults can experience history through touch, sound, smell, participation and hands-on activities during guided tours, workshops, rallies and other educational programmes. Specific programme offerings may change. The Kinzigsee in Langenselbold offers a different kind of experience: this swimming lake has a sandy beach, a large sunbathing lawn and clear water. Visitors can swim, sunbathe, play beach volleyball, sail, windsurf and stand-up paddle. For seasonal details, check the current offerings.
The Main-Kinzig district also has plenty to offer hiking enthusiasts. The 9-metre-high Wartturm on Molkenberg is a viewpoint and a starting point for hikes, with panoramic views stretching across Bad Orb, the Spessart and the Vogelsberg. The “Spessartbogen” premium hiking trail passes through Biebergemünd. These regional attractions complement the range of things to do in Erlensee, while nature reserves, the Limes, Rückingen’s history and the Cultural Nights shape a stay in Erlensee itself.
