Maintal: Green Centre, Main Riverbank and Apple Culture
Accommodation in Maintal
Maintal has many different sides: orchard meadows and other landscape features shape the Green Centre, while various spots along the Main riverbank in Dörnigheim invite you to linger. Artworks explore local themes—from the landmark at Fischerpunkt to the apple as a symbol of Maintal’s orchard meadows and apple wine culture. When planning your stay, consider whether you’d like to focus mainly on paths through the landscape, time by the water, or both.
Green Centre and Orchard Meadows
The Green Centre is a recreational area of around two square kilometres between Maintal’s districts of Bischofsheim, Dörnigheim and Hochstadt. Its landscape includes orchard meadows, a wind-blown sand dune, wet grassland, lakes and streams. The paths connect the districts and are suitable for cyclists and pedestrians alike. This makes it easy to combine a stay in the countryside with exercise on foot or by bike.
The Green Centre is also an interesting place for nature observation: it provides a refuge for birds and other animals, and rare plants grow there. Its varied landscape features give the area a character distinct from the built-up urban environment. If you enjoy the outdoors, you can make this natural landscape the focus of your stay rather than spending your time in just one place.
The extensive belt of orchard meadows around Maintal is part of the largest contiguous orchard meadow area in Hesse. These meadows are exceptionally species-rich and scenic habitats; they provide fresh air and space to dream and relax. In Maintal, this combines scenic appeal with a tangible part of local identity. The orchard meadows and their importance to the town are also reflected in an artwork in Hochstadt.
By the Main: Playgrounds, Quiet Spots and Discoveries
The Main riverbank in Maintal-Dörnigheim stretches between Frauenhain in the west and Pappelwäldchen in the east. This riverside area includes natural meadows, children’s playgrounds, leisure facilities, extensive sunbathing lawns and quiet zones. These different spots offer a choice of ways to spend time by the water: playing, relaxing on the meadows or taking a quieter break. Further improvements to the Main riverbank are planned.
At Frauenhain on the Dörnigheim riverbank, individual trees have posts bearing the names of women who have been honoured. An information board beside the footpath and cycle path provides details about the trees and the women they commemorate. Between the trees and seating areas, the grove invites you to linger and explore. The signs add a commemorative and informative dimension to a walk here.
Fischerpunkt is a small park on the Dörnigheim riverbank, west of the former ferry landing. As a place to spend time and meet others, it invites you to linger, observe and explore, and brings Maintal’s riverbank into closer connection with the river. The Main Nymph is the landmark of Fischerpunkt. Right by the water is the improved Primus Line boat landing; you can combine your time by the river with a boat trip. If you’re planning a boat trip, check the timetable in advance.
Art Inspired by Maintal
In Maintal-Hochstadt, at the parish courtyard on the corner of Hauptstraße 9, stands the public artwork “The Apple Reigns”. The sculpture by Robert Kaller and Katrin Bindig-Trübel was commissioned in early 2024. Since 27 September 2024, it has visibly marked the centre of Maintal and connected the districts. The apple symbolises Maintal’s orchard meadows and apple wine culture. So the theme of orchard meadows can be encountered not only in the landscape, but also as a motif in public space.
The locations offer different points of interest: by the Main, the focus is on the water, places to spend time and the Main Nymph; in Hochstadt, the sculpture refers to orchard meadows and apple wine culture. This distinction can help with planning if you’d like to include art and local motifs alongside nature and relaxation.
