Accommodation in Lorsbach
Geological landscape history and the S-Bahn give Lorsbach two concrete starting points for a trip. The “People and Earth” themed trail connects the town center of Hofheim am Taunus with Lorsbach. Its geological information boards, a flyer, and an interactive app explain how the surrounding landscape developed. Before your visit, check whether the app and supplementary digital materials are available.
Getting there and finding your way when looking for accommodation
Lorsbach station is served by S-Bahn line S2 between Dietzenbach, Frankfurt, and Niedernhausen. There is a public parking lot at the station. Check timetables and connections with RMV before your trip.
Hofheim station is also accessible from Frankfurt am Main: by taking the S2 toward Niedernhausen or a regional train toward Limburg, in both cases via Hofheim station. These connections serve the destination of Hofheim am Taunus; check the current timetable for specific journeys. This lets you distinguish when planning whether Lorsbach station is your main arrival point or whether Hofheim is also important.
In the destination of Hofheim am Taunus: forest and nature
The Forest Bird Trail runs through Hofheim City Forest at the end of Breckenheimer Straße, toward Sportpark Heide. It is freely accessible and has seven learning stations about forest birds and the forest as a habitat. A scavenger hunt following the tawny owl’s tracks can be booked for children’s groups and families. It is 2.5 kilometers long and takes about two to three hours. The scavenger hunt therefore offers a clearly defined way to explore the subject of forest birds through a shared activity; the time estimate also helps with planning your day.
The forest garden in Hofheim am Taunus offers a different kind of nature experience: it is a habitat for plants and animals, as well as a place for learning and relaxation. If you would like your outings to focus more on forest knowledge or on nature as a habitat, these two options offer distinct emphases.
Local history, mills, and leatherworking
Near Lorsbach, the Hofheim City Museum documents the history of the milling and leather industries in the valley near Lorsbach. Around 1850, there were more than 50 mills there; former leather factories and tanneries were also part of the region’s history. Machinery, leather goods, and hands-on material comparisons bring these working worlds to life. The Hofheim City Museum opened in 1993 and is located right next to the historic Kellereibezirk in Hofheim am Taunus. Its permanent exhibition covers art, archaeology, and local history. Check opening hours before your visit.
Archaeology and trails on Kapellenberg
Kapellenberg near Hofheim am Taunus is one of the largest settlements of the Michelsberg culture, dating from 4200 to 3500 BC. The site covered 45 hectares, with a built-up area of 26 hectares. Remains of the former ramparts are still visible in the terrain. A four-kilometer Archaeological Trail, with information boards, takes you through the history of Hofheim’s local hill and its settlement, dating back to the Neolithic period.
There are also specific directions for planning your route on Kapellenberg: from the hiking trail on Kreuzweg, you can reach the mountain chapel via a steep footpath in about five minutes. The Cohausen Temple stands in the forest on Kapellenberg and is accessible via hiking trails. The circular trail, the steep climb to the chapel, and the paths to the temple each appeal to different interests—from settlement history to the buildings on the hill.
The options differ by subject: “People and Earth” explores how the landscape developed, Kapellenberg focuses on archaeological settlement, and the Forest Bird Trail covers forest birds and their habitat.
