Breidenbach: Views, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Breidenbach
Breidenbach can be explored on two scales: take in the sweeping views from the Jubilee Observation Tower, then discover the town’s special details, from hiking trails to art and church architecture. This lets you make outdoor activities and cultural discoveries different focal points of your stay.
Views and Trails in Breidenbach
The Jubilee Observation Tower in Breidenbach has three viewing levels, the highest of which is 20 metres up. From the tower, you can see across the municipality and over much of the Lahn-Dill Highlands towards the Westerwald and Siegerland. The view takes in both the town itself and a panorama extending far beyond its surroundings.
Breidenbach has panoramic hiking trails as well as a local cultural history trail. The panoramic trails focus on the landscape, while the trail through the town offers a cultural history angle. These are different ways to explore Breidenbach: one with a focus on the landscape, the other on the town itself.
There is also a cycling route to Breidenbach: the Rotary Hinterland Tour runs through the Perftal valley via Niedereisenhausen, Quotshausen and Wolzhausen. It is a 35-kilometre circular route. This gives you a choice of specific but different types of route: trails to explore on foot and a signposted circular cycling route.
Church Architecture, Organ and Wooden Sculptures
One striking building is the Early Gothic hall church, with a church tower that twists around its own axis. The church is also home to the Heinemann organ. The architecture and organ offer two distinct points of interest: the tower’s unusual shape and a named feature inside the church.
The sculpture park features the wooden sculptures “Birth-Life-Death” by Jochen Adam. The title itself brings the themes of birth, life and death together, creating a distinct cultural highlight alongside the church architecture. Visitors interested in public art will find a specific group of works here, offering a different focus from the trails and observation tower.
Outside the town, about 300 metres east of Breidenbach, a Jewish cemetery with 50 gravestones lies on a rise beside a wooded area. Its location and the relatively small number of gravestones make it a different kind of destination from the trails and buildings within the town. When planning your visit, it is worth thinking of it as a nearby destination rather than a place of interest in the town centre.
More to Explore in the Wider Marburg-Biedenkopf Destination
Look beyond Breidenbach and the wider Marburg-Biedenkopf destination offers landscapes and cultural sites with a different character. The district encompasses a variety of upland landscapes, numerous half-timbered villages, and historic and modern towns. This regional variety complements Breidenbach’s views and trails with different townscapes and landscapes.
Non-motorised boats are permitted on the Perf Reservoir, including for stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing. A walking path circles the lake; it is open year-round and suitable for pushchairs. The lake also has e-bike charging stations, a bicycle repair station and free parking. Water activities and a walk offer different ways to enjoy the area.
Culture and tradition add to the region’s appeal. The Grenzgang festival in Biedenkopf takes place every seven years and lasts three days, bringing locals and visitors from around the world together at historic forest sites. In Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen, the Schartenhof, which is over 300 years old, now serves as a centre for art, culture and music. Its programme includes seasonal exhibitions featuring works from the region as well as painting, photography, graphic art and sculpture. There are also marionette theatre performances of classical operas.
