Angelburg: High-Flying Hikes and Traces of Historic Pasture Use
Accommodation in Angelburg
The Hirzenhainer Höhenflug and the Strickshute near Frechenhausen offer two different perspectives on Angelburg: a regional hiking route and the history of a shared pasture. Together, they take you from a distinctive trail name to traces of earlier land use. Both topics offer a concrete starting point for exploring the town and its landscape as you plan your trip.
Church and the Hirzenhainer Höhenflug
At the Protestant church in Lixfeld, a portal with an information board about the Hirzenhainer Höhenflug stands by the old cemetery. In 2007, the church received an honorary plaque as part of the nationwide “Lebensraum Kirchturm” (“Church Tower Habitat”) initiative. One of the 18 extra tours on the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Trail, the Höhenflug forms part of a wider hiking network; it opened on 20 April 2008. Here, a specific landmark in Lixfeld meets the route’s regional context.
Strickshute: Pasture history and matgrass grassland
The Strickshute lies south of Frechenhausen, in the municipality of Angelburg. This site is a remnant of the historic use of low-yield soils as pasture for all the village’s cattle. Despite two periods of afforestation, well-preserved remnants of matgrass grassland, which is highly endangered across Europe, can still be found on the former pasture. The site is also home to impressive pollarded beeches estimated to be 250 to 300 years old. History and natural value come together here: an earlier form of land use shaped the area, while its surviving vegetation and old beeches are among its distinctive features today.

Culture in Biedenkopf
As a regional heritage museum, the museum in Biedenkopf Castle presents 900 years of Hinterland cultural history across 1,000 m². In Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen stands the Schartenhof, a half-timbered building more than 300 years old and one of the historically significant examples of its kind in the Marburg-Biedenkopf region. Today, it is a center for art, culture, and music. Seasonal exhibitions feature works from the region as well as painting, photography, graphic art, and sculpture; there are also marionette theater performances of classical operas.
The Grenzgang in Biedenkopf is another tradition, celebrated every seven years. This three-day festival takes place at historic forest sites and brings together locals and visitors from all over the world. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the exact festival dates.
