Discover Ebsdorfergrund: Trails, Views and History
Accommodation in Ebsdorfergrund
Ebsdorfergrund invites you to get to know its landscapes and history along a variety of routes. The Ebsdorfergrund circular hiking trail encompasses the entire municipal area, while other routes explore distinctive landscapes; historic buildings and the local history museum in Hachborn add their own cultural highlights. This gives you a choice when planning your trip, from hikes with different characteristics to viewpoints and insights into the past of rural life.
Hiking across the municipality and along the stream valley
The Ebsdorfergrund circular hiking trail runs past nearly all the districts of the large municipality and takes in particularly scenic spots and viewpoints. If you would like to discover different perspectives on the municipal area while hiking, this extensive route is one of its defining features.
The Ebsdorfergrund Trail offers a different kind of route: It is 25 kilometres long, passes through five districts and links historically significant sights. The trail starts and ends at Frauenberg Castle Ruins and passes through Ebsdorf and Rauischholzhausen, among other places. In good weather, panoramic views extend as far as the Vogelsberg, Kellerwald and Taunus.
The Roßberg Adventure Trail covers more than five kilometres through the landscape shaped by the Zwester-Ohm stream around Roßberg. At six oases, you can explore the habitats of a unique stream floodplain landscape. The length also offers a clear point of reference when choosing: the 25-kilometre trail compared with the Adventure Trail’s more than five kilometres.
The panoramic circular trail runs around Kirchberg in Wittelsberg and is ideal for an evening stroll. Along the way, Wittelsberger Warte is illuminated and showcased. This gives the walk its own evening highlight, while the other trails offer different focal points through their landscapes, routes or connected sights.
So the route is not the only factor when choosing a hike: the circular trail offers an extensive route through the municipality, the trail links historic sights, and the RoĂźberg Adventure Trail explores the stream floodplain and its habitats. If you first decide whether you are more interested in a wider view of the area, history or exploring the landscape, it will be easier to choose the option that best suits your travel interests.
The watchtower, the castle and rural domestic life
Wittelsberger Warte was built in 1431 as an outpost for the Landgraves of Hesse against Mainz’s Amöneburg. So, as well as serving as an illuminated landmark on evening strolls, the tower has a clear historical connection.
The castle in Rauischholzhausen is a particularly noteworthy destination in Ebsdorfergrund; its park covers 30 hectares. The castle and park complement the hiking trails with their own cultural and scenic highlights.
At the local history museum in Hachborn, nine fully furnished rooms on two floors reflect rural everyday life and domestic culture over the past 200 years. This long time span makes the history of domestic life and everyday routines a recurring theme throughout the rooms.
A branch of the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail in the Marburg region also leads to the former “Waldensian colony” of Frauenberg.
