Kirchhain combines wildlife watching at Erlensee Lake with distinctive architectural history and opportunities for exercise and water-based activities. If you would like to cater to different interests on your trip, you will find plenty to explore here: from birdlife and historic buildings to parks and swimming facilities. The Marburg-Biedenkopf district is home to a variety of low mountain landscapes, numerous half-timbered villages, and both historic and young, modern towns.

Nature at Erlensee Lake

Erlensee Lake provides habitats for a diverse range of wildlife. Great crested grebes use it as a breeding site; cranes and many other migratory birds stop there to rest. For anyone interested in nature and wildlife, the lake is a clear reason to appreciate it as a habitat.

All paths around Erlensee Lake are wheelchair-accessible and have no inclines. A circular trail also leads through the natural surroundings and is well equipped for blind visitors. Erlensee Lake is just under a 20-minute walk from Kirchhain Town Hall; walking time may vary.

Architectural and local history

The town hall stands on the market square, and two dates tell the story of its construction: it was built in 1533, and its spiral staircase tower was added in 1562. The Witch Tower incorporates sections of the well-preserved town wall and offers another glimpse of Kirchhain’s historic architecture.

The Großseelheim Local History Museum, in one of Kirchhain’s districts, offers another perspective on local history. It presents domestic life, agriculture and crafts in the early 19th century, as well as traditional costumes and local history. Visits are possible by arrangement. This places architectural history and the town wall alongside the themes of everyday life and work.

Parks, exercise and water

In Annapark, alongside the war memorials, there is a playground, exercise equipment for older adults and several boules courts. The park’s facilities offer everything from play and exercise to boules; the war memorials also form part of its character.

Kirchhain’s two swimming pools have different features. Kirchhain Outdoor Pool has a combined non-swimmers’ and swimmers’ pool, including a 50-metre pool, a one-metre diving board and two water slides. Phoenix Indoor Pool Kirchhain has a sauna area and a non-swimmers’ pool with a constant water temperature of 30.5°C. These specific differences can help you choose: the outdoor pool centers on its pools, diving board and slides, while the indoor pool offers a sauna and a particular water temperature.

Kirchhain by bike

Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R 6 crosses Hesse from the Waldecker Land in the north, through Kirchhain, to Lampertheim in the south. The long-distance route is 405 kilometers in total; this figure refers to its entire length. For cycle tourists, it places Kirchhain on a route connecting the north and south of Hesse.
