Discover Weimar / Lahn: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Weimar / Lahn
Weimar / Lahn has a peaceful atmosphere, well-kept half-timbered houses and nature close at hand. Old churches, a mill on the banks of the Lahn and the archaeological Zeiteninsel reveal different sides of the town.
Cultural History and Events
After its renovation, the Old Church in Niederweimar combines exhibitions with a cultural programme that includes concerts, readings, theatre, choral music and special activities for children. The annual church garden festival is also an established part of life in Weimar. Dates and programmes may change, so check the events calendar before your visit.
After its renovation, the Old School in Niederwalgern serves as an exhibition venue. Wenkbach has an old fortified church in the village centre, while Argenstein offers a different historical highlight with a remarkable mill right on the banks of the Lahn. The cultural themes range from a changing programme of events and architectural history to a riverside mill.
A Journey Through the Ages
The Zeiteninsel in Weimar-Argenstein is located on an island in the Allna. A general guided tour covers five periods, from the Mesolithic to the Germanic era of Roman times. Guided visits use archaeological finds and reconstructions to bring 11,000 years of human history to life. The site for the early Roman Imperial period includes a Germanic farmstead with a main house, a small barn and a pit house. Before travelling, check which types of guided tours are available on your chosen date.
Cycling and Hiking Routes, Trains and Buses
For an active day, there are several ways to explore the area: cycle the Lahn Cycle Route through Weimar-Argenstein towards Marburg or Gießen, or follow the Königsetappe section of the Lahn Hiking Trail through Weimar. Check the latest information on the hiking route before setting out.
The seasonal MR-30 cycling and hiking bus connects Weimar-Argenstein with Marburg and Bad Endbach. It can carry up to 20 bicycles, including e-bikes. Since the season, operating days and capacity are important for planning, check the timetable and conditions in advance. Niederwalgern and Niederweimar have stops on the Main-Weser Railway; Marburg and Gießen can be reached by public and private bus services. If transport connections influence your choice of accommodation, you can use these stops as a guide when searching.
Water Activities on the Lahn and at Seepark
Seepark Niederweimar complements the cultural attractions and walking and cycling routes with activities on the water: it offers water skiing, stand-up paddleboarding and a sandy beach. Check which activities are available seasonally for your travel dates.
Another way to enjoy the water is to go canoeing on the Lahn, starting in nearby Roth. From there, a 160-kilometre route leads downstream. Check water conditions and make any necessary arrangements in advance. This lets you choose between activities at Seepark and a longer river trip, and plan around the experiences you want.
