Get to know Kortelshütte through its unusual settlement history and the different things to explore in the surrounding area: water, hikes, cross-country ski trails and introductory passenger flights. Whether you are interested in local history or prefer to plan your trip around outdoor activities and things to do, you will find plenty of ways to get started.

Settlement history and a local legend

Kortelshütte was first mentioned in official records in 1756. A local legend tells of a woman named “Cordula”, who is said to have founded the village. The settlement’s history also includes the purpose for which the land was primarily designated: people without property were to have the opportunity to establish a livelihood of their own. The Cordula legend and this social idea offer two different insights into the village’s history—as a founding story and as an indication of who the settlement land was intended to benefit.

Water and the history of technology

Water is the central theme of the Oberzent-Rothenberg Geopark trail. The historic pumping station in the vicinity of Kortelshütte offers another way to explore the subject of water. It supplied Rothenberg with water at first, and later Ober-Hainbrunn and Kortelshütte as well, until the 1960s. The water engine on display there dates from 1902. The trail places the topic of water in a Geopark context; at the pumping station, you can also connect the former water supply of several villages with a tangible example of technology.

Things to do: ski trails, a hiking route and flights

Near Rothenberg, at the edge of the village in the direction of Kortelshütte, there are trails for classic cross-country skiing and skating. Whether the trails are usable depends on seasonal snow conditions and grooming. This makes winter sports an option whose conditions you should keep in mind for the dates you are planning.

One hiking route connected with Kortelshütte is marked R5. It is 15.5 kilometres long and rated moderate. It runs mostly along forest tracks, with some sections on woodland paths; benches and huts are available for resting. The distance and difficulty rating provide different kinds of guidance: the kilometre figure describes the length of the route, while the rating indicates its stated level of difficulty.
