Water, hiking trails and the history of technology give Rothenberg in Oberzent a distinctive character. A themed trail explores the development of the water supply, while a historic facility brings the technology of the time to life. There are also different ways to enjoy the outdoors, from circular hikes to a cross-country ski trail on the high plateau.

Water on the Trail and in the Exhibition

The Rothenberg Geopark Trail puts water at its center. Ten information panels explain its importance to the lives of people in Rothenberg and the Finkenbach valley, as well as the development of the water supply. Those who want to explore a subject as well as the landscape while hiking will find a clear thread to follow: the trail connects the role of water in everyday life with the history of how it was supplied.

Another testament to this history is the restored, operational water engine used for the Rothenberg water supply, dating from 1902. It is on display in an exhibition building at the nature park car park on the L3410 state road between Rothenberg and Rothenberg-Kortelshütte. The system pumped water from a spring in the Gammelsbach valley, located 40 meters above the pumping station, up a difference in elevation of 280 meters to the Rothenberg reservoir—without using any external energy. These figures illustrate the scale of this historic water supply.

From 1902 until the 1960s, the pumping station initially supplied Rothenberg, and later Ober-Hainbrunn and KortelshĂĽtte as well. The story is about more than a single machine: it shows how a local facility supplied water to several communities for decades.

Circular Hikes and Winter Trails

In Oberzent, the Rothenberg Geo Trail, themed around water, and the Odenwald-Neckar Circular Trail Rothenberg/Hirschhorn are among the certified circular hiking trails. They offer different highlights: information about water accompanies hikers on the Geo Trail, while the Odenwald-Neckar Circular Trail starts and ends in Rothenberg. Those hiking the loop counterclockwise start at the stone cross south of the hilltop village, by the Alter Schuttplatz rest area. The trail is marked R5.

In winter, the Rothenberg cross-country ski trail offers a different way to experience the high plateau. This medium-length, flat trail runs across fields on Rothenberg’s scenic heights. Whether it can be used in winter depends on snow conditions. So the choice here depends not only on the activity you have in mind, but also on the conditions that season.

History and the Surrounding Region

Rothenberg’s history stretches far back: in 1353, Emperor Charles IV granted the village as an imperial fief to Knight Engelhard I of Hirschhorn and his heirs. This medieval connection adds another historical layer to the more recent story of the water supply.

The surrounding region offers further perspectives, too. Quiet forest paths connect the scenic heights of Oberzent-KortelshĂĽtte with Hirschhorn Castle on the Neckar; along the way, views of the Neckar valley occasionally open up. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose between exploring water and local history, marked circular hikes, cross-country skiing in winter and trails through the surrounding region.
