The Odenwald reveals itself through very different traces: medieval castles, Roman relics and geology whose origins date back hundreds of millions of years. Experiences include a path leading up to a castle, guided tours and talks about the Sea of Rocks, as well as hiking and cycling opportunities. When planning your stay, it is worth first deciding whether cultural history, geology, outdoor activities or regional cuisine will be your main focus.

Castles and Roman history

Breuberg Castle has a history spanning more than 850 years and is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. The Breuberg Museum is located inside the castle. The adventure trail starts at the historic market square in Neustadt, leads up to the castle and features viewing platforms and a large slide. The views, castle and slide give the route different points of interest if you would like to combine history and activity on an outing.

Roman landmarks offer further insights. The Roman Villa Haselburg near Hummetroth is an excavated and reconstructed villa rustica dating from the 2nd century AD. The Odenwald Limes is also among the Odenwald’s Roman relics. At the Sea of Rocks, meanwhile, numerous relics of Roman stoneworking from the 3rd and 4th centuries recall the site’s historical significance. These examples differ in form: one features a reconstructed villa, while the other foregrounds the working of stone.

Understanding the rocks and the Sea of Rocks

The crystalline Odenwald contains deep-seated rocks such as gabbro, diorite, granodiorite and granite, as well as metamorphic rocks. The latter provide evidence of a continent-continent collision that took place between 400 and 320 million years ago. This long geological history is brought to life at the Sea of Rocks in Lautertal: its formation is linked to geological processes that began more than 340 million years ago. The site thus connects its visible rocky landscape with a distant chapter in the history of the Earth.

The Sea of Rocks Information Centre provides information about the formation of the Sea of Rocks, Roman stoneworking, Siegfried’s Spring and the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geopark. You can book guided tours and talks through the centre. Topics range from geological development and stoneworking to legends, wildlife and the habitat of Felsberg. If you would like a guided tour or talk to shape your visit, check booking availability in advance. The information centre also includes a bistro serving regional dishes.

Explore on foot, by bike or by boat

The Odenwald has four nature-oriented trekking camps, connected by day stages. They are suitable for individual, weekend and multi-day tours. This choice makes it possible to consider the planned length of your tour from the outset. When making specific plans, check the camps’ booking and seasonal conditions.

Neckarsteinach, in the southern Odenwald, offers a different perspective: the town is surrounded by four medieval castles and has a five-kilometre, car-free riverside promenade with signposted hiking and cycling trails. During the summer months, boats operated by the WeiĂźe Flotte run regularly between Heidelberg and Neckarsteinach. If you plan to use this seasonal connection, check the current timetable before travelling.

Museum and regional cuisine

At the Gottersdorf Open-Air Museum, visitors can experience the Odenwald’s past first-hand. Regional cuisine adds another dimension to these discoveries: Odenwald inns serve dishes including green spelt and game, though the specific offerings vary by establishment. Farm shops and vending machines selling regional produce offer supplies for outdoor cooking. Availability and opening arrangements may vary.

When choosing your accommodation, you can start with what you want your stay to focus on: castles and Roman landmarks, the geology of the Sea of Rocks, active days or regional cuisine. Decide which experiences matter most to you, then tailor your search for accommodation in the Odenwald to the places that are important to your plans.
