Dudenhofen combines historic architectural styles with insights into local history and destinations for nature outings. You can start by exploring the old town and its distinctive buildings, then turn your attention to the wider destination of Rodgau and its trails.

Historic Architecture in the Old Town

On narrow plots typical of a street village, Dudenhofen’s old town showcases the “Franconian farmstead” layout. The Baroque Protestant parish church was built in 1769 to plans by Lieutenant of Engineers Apolt from Hanau. The Rektor-Geißler-Haus offers a different architectural accent: built in 1818, this half-timbered house features Neoclassical elements. The bakehouse also bears traces of a deliberate reconstruction. It was rebuilt in 2001/2002 based on the original plans of the old “Backes”, which had been demolished in 1952, and is once again used regularly. Together, these buildings guide you through different periods—from the historic settlement pattern and the 18th and 19th centuries to the reconstruction of the bakehouse.

Local History, Explored in Different Ways

The Dudenhofen Association for Local History and Culture (Verein fĂĽr Heimatgeschichte und -Kultur Dudenhofen e.V.) offers an interactive digital historical tour of the town. It takes you through local history, stop by stop, and includes historic sites, photographs and explanatory texts; optional themed routes are also available. This lets you explore the individual stops digitally and by topic. The Dudenhofen Local History Museum is housed as an archive in the former police station at Georg-August-Zinn-StraĂźe 1.

In the wider destination of Rodgau, the Rodgau History Trails offer another way to explore historic places. Uniformly designed information boards mark 41 historically significant sites. Together, these form a 15-kilometre chain of five history trails. You can explore the trails individually or in full, on foot or by bicycle. Texts, images and maps explain the history and the location of each site; the trails were created for local residents and history enthusiasts from further afield.

Nature and Playgrounds in Dudenhofen

South of Dudenhofen lies the “Kies- und Sandgrube von Dudenhofen” nature reserve. It protects water and succession areas created by sand and gravel extraction, providing a habitat and refuge for rare and endangered animal and plant species. The Dudenhofen forest recreation area has a playground at “Gänsbrüh”. The wider destination of Rodgau also includes Lutherpark in Dudenhofen, on the Rodau; there is a playground there, too. These places add nature and play opportunities to your choice of destinations for outings.

Hiking and Cycling Routes in the Wider Rodgau Area

Rodgau is surrounded by fields and has one of the largest municipal forests in Hesse. The Rodgau Circular Route is a loop for hiking and cycling that offers views of Dudenhofen. It is 41.2 kilometres long, signposted and suitable for travel in both directions. It runs mostly through fields and forest, and only occasionally through the town districts.

You can combine sections of the Rodgau Circular Route with the S-Bahn; bicycles can be taken on board free of charge. Every town district in Rodgau has an S-Bahn station. GPX data is available to download for route planning. Before setting out, check the route and the current rules for taking bicycles on board. This will help you decide between hiking or cycling the full loop and taking individual sections with an S-Bahn connection.
