Mühlheim am Main combines trails along the Main with floodplains, meadows and woodland, as well as a rich history of milling. For active days, there is a network of cycling and hiking trails, a themed circular route and shorter trails; culture enthusiasts will find further points of interest at Brückenmühle and the town museum.

Cycling and hiking trails along the Main

A network of cycling and hiking trails runs along the Main, through floodplains and woodland; the trails are considered to be well signposted. Nevertheless, check trail conditions and signage before setting out. One specific option is the 16-kilometre Mühlheim Loop of the Hessian Apple Wine and Orchard Meadow Route, marked with a red apple logo. It passes through Mühlheim, Dietesheim and Lämmerspiel, along the banks of the Main and through floodplains, meadows and woodland. The route combines walking with Hessian apple wine production, linking the landscape with regional tradition.

Compare trail lengths and highlights

For a shorter distance, you can consider the Lämmerspiel Circular Trail: it is 7.7 kilometres long and goes around Gailenberg. The Mill Hiking Trail, by contrast, focuses on history and follows the sites of former and surviving mills through several districts of Mühlheim. The routes therefore differ both in length and theme. Mühlheim also lies in the heart of the RheinMain Regional Park and along its 190-kilometre circular route, which offers a wider regional perspective.

A broader cycling network in the Offenbach destination

In the wider Offenbach destination, Mühlheim, Mainhausen, Seligenstadt and Hainburg are among the towns in the Offenbach district on the Hessian Lower Main that lie on the Main Cycle Route. A 75-kilometre section of the Main Cycle Route stretches from the mouth of the Main to the northern Spessart near the Bavarian-Hessian border. This places the local circular trails within a wider route network if you want to plan a more extensive cycling trip. In the Offenbach destination, the Regional Park Circular Route links orchards and wetlands with artworks and historical landmarks.

Mills and local history

Brückenmühle was first documented in 1576 and is considered the last operational mill in the Offenbach district. An exhibition focuses on historic milling equipment; regular guided tours cover the mill’s history and technology.

The Mühlheim Town Museum is housed in the Gasthaus zum Engel, built in 1786; the building later served as a school and town hall. The collections include prehistoric and early historical finds from the surrounding area, including ceramics, weapons and jewellery. The museum also displays a collection on the African Lower Paleolithic, which explores human evolution. As guided tours and exhibition displays may change, it is worth checking the latest visitor information before your visit.
