Feldatal offers two specific starting points for a walking trip: circular hiking trails and Panorama Trail 2. At 14 kilometres long, the trail provides a clear benchmark; elevation figures also help put the route into perspective. The surrounding area adds nature-related attractions of its own. As a broader travel destination, the Vogelsberg offers further landscapes and cultural attractions.

Hiking trails in Feldatal

Panorama Trail 2 is 14 kilometres long and runs at an elevation of 287 to 415 metres. Its elevation difference is 128 metres, and the route has a total ascent and descent of 278 metres. These figures highlight different aspects of the trail: the distance describes its length, while the elevation range and ascent and descent put its changes in elevation into perspective. This means the route can be considered in terms of more than just distance.

Feldatal also has circular hiking trails. The panoramic hiking trails through Feldatal are listed as permanent hiking trails by the German Volkssport Association (DVV). This brings different types of hiking into focus: the specific figures for Panorama Trail 2, as well as circular trails and the classification of the panoramic hiking trails.

Nature in the surrounding area

In the destination’s surrounding area, the Feldatal floodplain complex includes near-natural beech forests and several ponds and pools, some with extensive waterside vegetation. Also nearby, the Feldatal nature reserve extends for around 3.5 kilometres along the Felda stream valley and its side valleys between Obernhausen and Schellnhausen. Woodlands, bodies of water and waterside vegetation offer specific insights into the natural character of the area.

The Vogelsberg as a broader travel destination

The Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic area. The Vogelsberg mountain hay meadows also shape the region’s natural landscape: they are the largest protected areas of their kind in Hesse. These wider regional landscape features complement Feldatal’s hiking and nature attractions, without equating the places or their individual characteristics.

In Schotten, the Vulkanеum explains volcanism in an engaging way as an interactive museum. Its multimedia exhibition focuses on volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg. Visitors can experience the past firsthand at various hands-on stations and with interactive exhibits. The museum thus combines scientific topics with an interactive exhibition experience.

Trails and experiences in the Vogelsberg

A direct route comparison can be made by length: Panorama Trail 2 in Feldatal and the GipfelTour Schotten are both 14 kilometres long. The GipfelTour crosses four peaks in the Oberwald and passes through species-rich mountain meadows and varied woodland with rugged basalt formations. The Weitblicktour Ulrichstein offers a different benchmark: this moderate circular trail is 11.6 kilometres long and loops around Ulrichstein through deciduous forests and a patchwork of small-scale agricultural landscapes. Distance, scenery and the stated difficulty provide different points of reference when choosing a route.

A much longer route, the 119-kilometre Vulkanring Vogelsberg, links natural and cultural highlights around the ridge of the Hoher Vogelsberg. Other activities offer different experiences: the treetop walkway is 500 metres long in total and features suspension bridges. At the Hoherodskopf climbing forest, nature and adventure enthusiasts can climb from tree to tree under the guidance of trained professionals.

Culture and nature in Ulrichstein

Since 2001, the Vogelsberggarten on Ulrichstein’s Schlossberg has been maintained and cultivated using traditional farming methods, preserving centuries-old cultural heritage around the castle ruins. Visitors can discover 243 species of wild-growing plants there. This brings together a view of plant diversity and the traditional cultural landscape. At the Ulrichstein natural bathing biotope, aquatic plants and recirculation systems naturally purify the bathing water.
