In Gemünden (Wohra), an art and experience trail, historic buildings, cycling routes and an observatory come together. This gives you a choice of different ways to shape your trip: exercise and themed stops, local history, cycling or—if the weather is good—stargazing.

On foot and by bike

The art and experience trail is an approximately 2.3 km walking route through Gemünden (Wohra). Its stops explore nature, games, sports, fun and local history. The route has two sections: first from the Old Railway Station to Kälberborn, then along Neustadtstraße to the Wohra and downstream to the sports ground, swimming pool and Aumühle. You can therefore get a sense of the route both from its approximate length and from the named stops and endpoints.

Cycling offers a different focus: the Wiera-Wohra Cycle Route passes through Schiffelbach to Gemünden an der Wohra. You can also plan a stop for refreshments in Gemünden while riding the Ohm-Eder Cycle Route or the Wiera-Wohra Cycle Route. This is a clear distinction for planning purposes: the art trail focuses on walking and themed stops, while these named cycle routes offer the option of stopping for refreshments.

Local history and experiences

The Witches’ Tower is the only surviving one of the city wall’s four former half-round towers; it once served as a watchtower. The Gemünden town church offers a different historical reference point: its core was built between 1431 and 1485. The two buildings provide different perspectives on the town’s history—the tower’s former function and the period when the church was built.

At Gänseberg, visitors can observe stars and celestial objects through a telescope at the Gemünden Observatory when the weather is good. Bear this weather condition in mind if you want to make stargazing a fixed part of your plans.

The Gemünden Activity Park was completed in June 2024. Its facilities include a balance course, a zip line, a climbing and gymnastics frame, a sandbox, a marble run and plenty of seating. The park is intended for all age groups; small children can use the sandbox and marble run. It adds play and exercise options to walks, cycling and historic sights.

If you’re looking for accommodation in Gemünden, base your plans on the kind of trip you want: are walking trails and architectural history your main focus, would you like to stop for refreshments while cycling, or are the activity park and—if the weather is good—the observatory your priorities?

More places to explore in Waldeck-Frankenberg

Other places in the wider Waldeck-Frankenberg destination offer different highlights. The 66-kilometre Urwaldsteig Edersee trail can be walked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-led hike, with each stage covering around 22 kilometres. The Historic Town Hall in Frankenberg (Eder) offers a cultural and historical highlight: this half-timbered town hall, built in 1509, has ten towers representing the town’s ten guilds. The farmers’ market takes place every Saturday in the town hall’s Rathausschirn. Check the date before your trip.

The GeoFoyer Kalkturm Korbach presents the landscape and wildlife around Korbach as they were 250 million years ago. An exhibition also covers the extraction and processing of limestone, as well as its industrial use in the quarry for over 100 years. It brings together the history of the Earth and the history of limestone use.
