Berkatal: Discover the Karst Landscape and Trails
Accommodation in Berkatal
Berkatal combines a striking karst landscape with trails that place varying emphasis on nature, exercise and local history. At the Hie and Kripp sinkholes, larger and smaller, shallow or deep depressions shape the terrain. The juniper heathland is another feature, maintained through grazing by the Original Meißnerlamm sheep. The local history museum has its own focus: it is dedicated to life, living and working in earlier times, with particular emphasis on the region’s mining history.
Karst Landscape and Trails
The different forms of sinkholes give the karst area its characteristic structure. Visitors who pay attention to the landscape and its conservation will encounter two specific themes here: geological formations and the preserved juniper heathland. A nature trail runs through the Hielöcher. The Kripplöcher have a separate access rule: they may not be entered without a guide. Check in advance whether a guided tour is available.
The P2 Frankershausen Karst Premium Trail leads from Frankershausen through the Hielöcher nature reserve to Ellerstein and Großer Marstein. This offers a different route from the nature trail: it runs from a named village through a protected area to two named destinations. When planning a hike, visitors can therefore distinguish between the nature trail through the Hielöcher and the specifically described route of the premium trail.
Mill Nature Trail and Water Play
The Mill Nature Trail, which opened in summer 2025, is located right by the sports ground. The sports ground is also the starting point for the P2 Frankershausen Karst Premium Trail. The Mill Nature Trail brings together a playground, a meeting place and an educational trail. At its water-play island, visitors can experience firsthand how water brings life and movement. This means that a trail with water features and the start of a named hiking route are located at the same landmark, although the two routes do not serve the same purpose.
Berkatal Local History Museum
The Berkatal Local History Museum is located on the upper floor of the municipal administration building at Berkastraße 54. It is open by telephone appointment, so please arrange your visit by phone in advance. The museum focuses on life, living and working in the region in earlier times, with particular emphasis on the region’s mining history.
On display are rocks and minerals with information about their uses, old miners’ lamps and equipment, as well as prehistoric exhibits from the Meißner foothills. Various tools illustrate agriculture and woodworking; flax and wool processing are also documented. The collection thus brings together different aspects of work in earlier times: mining alongside agriculture, woodworking and fibre processing.
Exploring by Bicycle
A cycling tour offers a different focus. The Anger Cycle Tour connects the village greens in the districts of the municipality of Meißner with the village green in Frankershausen, where the Berkatal municipal administration is based. A specifically named village green in Frankershausen is therefore part of the described route. Visitors weighing up different activities during their stay can consider the hiking trails, Mill Nature Trail, museum and cycling tour as separate options.
The Wider Region: Werra-Meißner District
As a wider travel destination, the Werra-Meißner district is part of the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land. Hoher Meißner is the region’s highest mountain and is considered the home of Frau Holle. Between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufungen Forest, the Werra-Meißner district features great geological diversity, varied landscapes and a rich variety of flora and fauna. This regional setting complements Berkatal’s specific attractions, from the Hie and Kripp sinkholes to the local trails and local history museum.
