Discover Florstadt
Accommodation in Florstadt
Florstadt invites you to explore a range of themes: Roman frontier history, Jewish and civic heritage, cycle routes and birdwatching. If you are planning a trip, you can first consider which of these facets you would like to shape your stay. The places and activities offer various ways to do so—from the Winterberg to the birdwatching hides in Staden.
Roman history in the landscape
The longest section of the Upper Germanic Limes runs through Florstadt. Remains of the Limes ramparts and ditches are still visible on the Winterberg in Stammheim Forest; this was the site of the highest Limes watchtower, WP 4/96. Visible traces in the landscape and the watchtower’s precise designation make the history tangible. The Roman heritage also includes a cohort fort with bath buildings in Ober-Florstadt, dating to around 200 AD. The Limes theme thus encompasses both the visible ramparts and ditches on the Winterberg and an archaeological site in Ober-Florstadt.
Jewish heritage and local history
The former synagogue building is located at OrlesstraĂźe 1 in Nieder-Mockstadt. The Jewish community acquired the half-timbered building in 1836. It is a listed monument because of its historical, cultural and urban-planning significance. In Nieder-Florstadt, the Saalbau Museum focuses on motorcycle maker Friedel MĂĽnch, local crafts history and the history of the town of Florstadt. These topics highlight different aspects: one focuses on a former synagogue building, the other on the connection between an individual, crafts and local history.
Cycling and nature watching
The Florstädter Stern circular cycle route runs in a star pattern through all the town’s districts and explores what makes each one distinctive. The German Limes Cycle Route, the Regionalpark Limes Route and the Regionalpark Nidda Route also intersect in Florstadt-Staden. These route details help with different planning questions: the Florstädter Stern includes all the districts, while the three routes mentioned share a junction in Staden. Check the local signposting before setting off.
From birdwatching hides in Staden’s Mähried, you can observe storks, lapwings and Eurasian curlews. Which species you actually see may vary by season. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a different focus from the cycle routes and historical sites; the hides and the bird species mentioned also give the landscape a tangible point of interest.
The Wetterau as a wider setting
The Wetterau also offers regional points of interest for a trip. The nature reserves in the Wetterau district are accessible to visitors via information boards, observation points, hiking trails and cycle routes. Bingenheimer Ried is one of the key areas of the “Auenverbund Wetterau” protected landscape. This information relates to the Wetterau as a broader travel destination, rather than to individual places in Florstadt.
A network of regional and long-distance cycle routes runs through the Wetterau, and many of these routes connect with one another. Numerous railway stations and stops make it possible to reach the cycle routes in the Wetterau district by public transport. As services and stops may change, it is worth checking the latest timetables before travelling.
For culture enthusiasts, the Wetterau Museum broadens the regional perspective: it presents local and regional history from the Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages, as well as the history of the Celts and Romans. It is also a regional Limes information centre for the central Wetterau. The towns and municipalities of the Wetterau offer themed guided tours, including night-watchman walks through old lanes. Dates for individual tours may vary.
