Ortenberg brings together historic townscapes, music and experiences in nature. In the town centre, half-timbered houses and the town ramparts tell the story of the place; in Lißberg, an exceptional collection of musical instruments takes centre stage. Along the Nidder, the House in the Salt Meadows offers a different perspective on the landscape. Other highlights include the Kalter Markt and trails for hikers and cyclists. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose different focuses, from culture and nature to active days out.

Old Town and Church Art

Ortenberg was first referred to as a town in the 13th century. The town ramparts, which enclose the historic centre with its many half-timbered buildings, date from this period. The three-aisled Marienkirche is also worth a look: it houses one of the oldest choir stalls in Hesse and a copy of the significant Ortenberg Altarpiece from the 15th century. In the town centre, you can discover architectural history and church art side by side.

Guided tours of the attractive old town also include a route along the Ortenberg Lantern Trail. If you would like to plan a guided tour, check the latest dates before your trip. The walk complements the historic buildings with a guided exploration of the town centre.

Music to See and Try

The Lißberg Musical Instrument Museum displays more than 2,000 original instruments and replicas. It has the world’s largest collection of hurdy-gurdies and bagpipes. The collection makes Lißberg a special destination for anyone who wants not only to hear musical instruments, but also to learn about their shapes and construction. Visitors can try instruments at a music table; cassettes or CDs are available as an audio accompaniment. This combines a look at the collection with a direct experience of the sounds.

Kalter Markt and Nature Along the Nidder

The Kalter Markt offers a very different way to experience Ortenberg. It has been celebrated every year at the end of October since the 13th century and is considered the largest folk festival in Upper Hesse. The market includes a centuries-old horse and foal market, as well as a large traders’ market with more than 400 stalls. As the exact annual programme is important for planning your trip, it is worth checking the event dates in advance.

The House in the Salt Meadows of NABU Ortenberg and its grounds are located in the Nidder floodplain, characterised by species-rich meadows. Around the house, a variety of nature experiences introduce visitors to different topics: a net is used in the renaturalised Nidder, a magnifying glass on the wildflower meadow, and the snack garden offers another way to explore. The renaturalised stretch of river directly behind the house provides a habitat for kingfishers, dragonfly species and brown trout; beavers also visit the river regularly.

The Salzwiesen und Weinberg von Selters nature reserve is close to the House in the Salt Meadows. Salt-loving plants such as three-pronged sea lavender and strawberry clover grow there. This brings two different perspectives on nature together in a small area: the renaturalised Nidder and its habitats, and the reserve’s distinctive plant life.

Hiking, Cycling and Finding the Right Accommodation

Marked hiking trails in Ortenberg’s local recreation area lead through the surrounding upland landscape. The Bonifatius Route is also of interest to hikers; it passes through the municipality of Ortenberg. By contrast, the Vulkanradweg runs directly through Ortenberg’s central town and through Lißberg, Eckartsborn and Selters. This distinction can help when choosing your route: the Vulkanradweg passes through the places listed, while the Bonifatius Route skirts the municipality.

The type of accommodation you are looking for in Ortenberg can be guided by the focus of your trip: are you most interested in the town centre, with its half-timbered buildings and Marienkirche; does the musical instrument museum or nature along the Nidder appeal to you more; or would you like to spend most of your days hiking or cycling? The Kalter Markt may also influence your choice of dates. This way, you can start looking for accommodation based on the experiences that matter to you during your stay, rather than with a general holiday itinerary.
