Lütetsburg is defined above all by its Castle Park, an English landscape garden. The North Sea is about eight kilometres from Lütetsburg. Garden art, nature and castle history offer a range of themes for a stay.

A Landscape Garden with a Distinctive Character

Lütetsburg Castle Park is the largest private English landscape garden in northern Germany. It was laid out in the early Romantic style and is one of the few surviving examples of this type of garden on mainland Europe. More than 150 species of trees and shrubs shape its botanical diversity; around 40 bird species also live in the park.

Guided tours explain the garden’s history and botany. They also cover exotic plants, botanical rarities and architecture. A tour thus brings together the historic design and the park’s distinctive plants.

Castle History and Visitor Options

The origins of Lütetsburg Castle date back to the East Frisian chieftain Lütet Manninga. After a severe fire in 1956, the present-day castle was rebuilt on the foundations of the 1517 building. The castle is privately occupied; interior visits are not possible.

Children aged six to twelve can explore the park in a Mini Land Rover. This seasonal activity is available approximately from May to October and depends on the conditions at the time; availability may vary. A guided tour focuses on history and botany, while the Mini Land Rover is the seasonal exploration option for this age group.

Cycling Tour and Getting There

The short Red Route is an approximately 18-kilometre circular tour starting in Norden that takes in Lütetsburg and its English landscape garden. This makes the area a destination on a regional cycling tour. To travel by public transport, you can take the train to Norden and then use a Weser-Ems-Bus service to Lütetsburg Castle. Check current timetables before travelling. The Red Route is a cycling circuit; the train and bus connection, by contrast, is for travelling to Lütetsburg Castle by public transport.
