Discover Hage: Cycling routes, spa park and East Frisian history
Accommodation in Hage
Hage combines routes for active days with a spa park, historic buildings and insights into East Frisian culture. Several cycling routes pass through the town, along with a cycle route network for planning your own rides and an option combining paddling and cycling. Those who prefer to focus on culture and history will find more to explore at the church, the mill and in the collections.
Spa Park, Exercise and Relaxation
A circular path winds beneath the trees in the lakeside spa park. Benches invite you to rest along the way. For active recreation, there is an exercise trail, and the park also has a dog swimming area. The Hage Spa Centre brings together aquatic fitness, a sauna, massage, physiotherapy and wellness treatments under one roof. This means visitors can enjoy different experiences within the town: exercise outdoors and a wide range of treatments at the spa centre.
Cycling Routes and a Paddle-and-Cycle Combination
The cycle route network lets you plan your own rides. Another option combines paddling with a return trip by bicycle: the paddle-and-cycle station in Hage links a paddling trip to Norden-Leybucht or Neßmersiel with a return ride through woods and meadows. This offers two different ways to plan your day: a self-planned cycling tour or a combination of a water route and a cycling route.
The museum railway route also offers a clear guide to the area on the map: it runs from Norden via Lütetsburg and Hage to Westerende and Dornum. The route links these places in a set order and adds another way to explore the region alongside the cycling and paddling options.
East Frisian History and Traditions
St. Ansgari Church is one of the oldest church buildings in East Frisia. Its nave dates from around 1220; the west tower was added in 1250. Hage Mill also tells the story of the town’s architectural history: the five-storey gallery windmill was built in 1871. It is 30.30 metres tall and is considered the tallest mill of its type in Europe.
East Frisian traditions include Low German, a tea ceremony and Boßeln, a traditional road bowling game. The Magda-Heyken House is home to the Hage Archive, with historical records, documents and photographs. The house also displays historical objects from crafts, trade and agriculture, as well as paintings; it also has a library and a collection on local history. Kunsthaus Hage presents works by various artists in changing exhibitions. The Forest & Wildlife Museum provides information about the East Frisian forest and its inhabitants.
The nearby Lütetsburg Castle Park provides a distinctive landscape setting. Covering around 30 hectares, it was laid out in the early Romantic style and is one of the few surviving examples of its kind on the European continent. It is also considered the largest privately owned English landscape garden in northern Germany.
Another Look at the Wider Aurich Destination
In the wider Aurich destination, the Fehntjer Tief Nature Conservation Centre works to preserve the Fehntjer Tief natural and cultural landscape. It is also an extracurricular environmental education centre and a place for meeting and public outreach. In spring and summer, students and visitors can experience the flora and birdlife of the wet meadows on guided bicycle or walking tours. The listed Gulfhaus at the centre is a typical East Frisian farmhouse dating from 1843.
