Faßberg: Heathland, the Heidschnuckenweg and the Airlift
Accommodation in Faßberg
Faßberg lies amid expansive woodland and heathland, where hiking and local history can be explored in different ways. Nature and outdoor activities, historic sites, or a combination of both can shape your stay.
Two stages linked to Faßberg
The Heidschnuckenweg brings the landscape to life on two stages linked to Faßberg. Stage 9 runs from Müden (Örtze) via Poitzen to Faßberg and is about 7 km long. Stage 10 starts in Faßberg and runs for around 19 km to Oberoher Heide. The second route is therefore significantly longer; if you are planning a hike, you can start by choosing your preferred distance. Highlights on Stage 10 include the juniper woodland, Haußelberg and Oberohe Heath.
Heathland, surveying and the Airlift
At Haußelberg, the Gauß stone commemorates Karl-Friedrich Gauß’s surveying work in the heathland in 1828. The stage thus brings together a named landmark and a specific reference to the history of surveying. The heathland around Oberohe, along the Kieselgur circular trail, also forms part of the largest continuous areas of heath in Südheide Nature Park.
Faßberg was laid out as a garden city in the 1930s, alongside the construction of an airfield. The Berlin Airlift Memorial in Faßberg explores the Allied operation to safeguard Berlin’s freedom. The town’s history and the Airlift offer different historical perspectives: one recalls the founding of Faßberg, the other the operation in support of Berlin.
The Airlift Museum offers QR-code audio information at nine points in five languages, as well as a virtual tour of the memorial. If you would like to use either of these during your visit, check current availability.
More activities in Südheide Nature Park
Across the wider region, Südheide Nature Park offers various ways to experience the landscape actively. These include ten themed cycling routes, 23 themed circular hiking trails, five discovery trails and 13 bridleways. There is therefore more to choose from than hiking alone. You can choose between cycling, hiking and riding routes; a discovery trail also offers a different experience from a longer route.
Water offers another perspective: visitors can rent a canoe in Südheide Nature Park to experience the park from the water. Canoe rental availability may vary depending on the operator and the season. This lets you consider trails on land and a possible canoe trip as separate ways to explore, without combining them into a single route.
Regional specialties include Heidschnucken roast, heathland potatoes, game, honey and smoked trout. Availability may vary depending on the season and the provider. These foods add a culinary perspective on Südheide Nature Park to its nature and cultural experiences.
