Discover Celle: Castle, Half-Timbered Houses and Culture
Accommodation in Celle
Celle combines a historic townscape with a history as a ducal residence that you can discover through its castle, gardens and cultural venues. Almost 500 half-timbered houses stand in Celle’s city centre; the old town feels like a living history book of stone and half-timbering. You can plan your trip around different interests: focus on parks and architecture, or explore the theatre, museums and stories of the House of Welf.
Gardens and the castle shape the townscape
To the south of the historic old town lies the French Garden, a listed public park dating from the 17th century. Its avenue of lime trees forms an east–west axis. Flowerbeds, lawns and groups of trees lie on either side, while a pond with a fountain completes the grounds. Celle Castle Park offers a different setting: it covers just under six and a half hectares. The Welf Castle stands on a small island, surrounded by large old trees and a castle moat. When choosing what to do, you can therefore opt for a garden with a clearly defined axis or a park connected to the castle.
The history of the ducal residence, theatre and museums
Over the centuries, Celle Castle developed from a simple fortress into the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The exterior and interior of the four-winged complex feature Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. The Residence Museum in the castle explores the history of the residence, the lives and work of the Welf dukes, the Danish Queen Caroline Mathilde and the history of the Kingdom of Hanover.
The castle chapel is also one of the site’s notable historic rooms: with its early Protestant furnishings, it is considered an important example of Renaissance art in northern Germany. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour of Welf Castle. Celle Palace Theatre offers another cultural highlight. It is considered Europe’s oldest Baroque theatre with regular performances and has its own acting company.
The synagogue in Celle is considered the oldest largely preserved half-timbered synagogue in Lower Saxony. One of its two front buildings houses a museum with changing exhibitions on Jewish life in Celle and Jewish cultural history. The Celle Art Museum offers a different focus: it is closed at night, while light art on and behind its glass façade illuminates the building from the outside. These different venues let you choose between architectural history, theatre, exhibitions and art in the urban landscape when planning your trip.
A walk and more experiences in the destination of Celle
The walk through Celle’s old town is a very easy 3.22-kilometre route. It begins at Celle Ducal Palace and ends at the synagogue in Celle. This makes for a manageable walk that can be an activity in its own right; the two endpoints give it a clear beginning and finish.
The wider destination of Celle offers nature and cultural experiences beyond the town itself. The South Heath Nature Park has 23 themed hiking trails, five experience trails and three long-distance hiking trails. In addition, ten signposted themed cycling routes cover a total of more than 400 kilometres, leading to notable sights and through heathland, forests, heathland streams, and moor and pond landscapes. Canoeing on the heathland streams in the district of Celle is permitted with restrictions each year from 16 May to 14 October; check local restrictions and water levels before setting off.
Wienhausen Abbey houses medieval art treasures, including tapestries from the 14th and 15th centuries, a painted nuns’ choir and valuable chests and cabinets. The collection also includes the oldest spectacles in the world. Expert explanations of the Gothic tapestries are given for one week each year, traditionally starting on the Saturday after Pentecost; check the dates before your trip. The “Hiking around Wienhausen” tour passes through the historic town centre with its half-timbered houses, goes by St Mary’s Church and ends at the abbey, which welcomes visitors from April to October.
