Meissendorf: Experience heathland, water and nature
Accommodation in Meissendorf
Meissendorf combines water, heathland and wildlife watching with a strong festival tradition. At Lake Hüttensee, swimming and play activities take centre stage; the Meißendorf Ponds/Bannetzer Moor and the heathland offer different landscape highlights. There are also opportunities for birdwatching, an experience room featuring animal footage and skydiving. During your stay, you can choose between different focuses, from water and activities to nature watching and cultural events.
Water and landscape
The Hüttenseepark in Meißendorf has a swimming lake with a swimming and play island. The facilities also include beach volleyball, mini golf, table tennis, table football and a Robinson adventure playground. The range extends from swimming to various forms of play and activity. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you would rather spend time by the water or try out different activities.
In the district of Meißendorf lies the Meißendorfer Teiche/Bannetzer Moor nature reserve, with the largest continuous water area in the Lüneburg Heath. The Meißendorf heathland also shapes the nature experience, but with a different landscape impression: in August and September, it becomes a sea of purple blossoms. Blooming can vary slightly from year to year; birches, junipers and pines surround the heathland.
You can reach the Meißendorf heathland via Kapellenweg; parking is available to the left of the cemetery. The access route and car park provide two clear reference points for your visit. If the heath in bloom is the reason for your trip, factor in the period in August and September and allow for possible slight variations from year to year.
Birds and wildlife watching
Observation towers along the circular walking trail around Lake Hüttensee offer opportunities to watch white-tailed eagles, ospreys and cranes.
At NABU Gut Sunder, a specially designed experience room shows animal footage. A camera system captures the footage day and night in high image quality and displays it for close observation. These offer two different ways to watch wildlife: at Lake Hüttensee, the focus is on observation towers and birds; in the experience room, visitors can examine camera footage in detail.
Heath Blossom Festival and other experiences
The Meißendorf Heath Blossom Festival has been celebrated since 1964 and attracts numerous guests each year. Meißendorf is the only locality in the district of Celle to have a Heath Queen. During the festival, the new Heath Queen is taken in a festive procession through the decorated village to the coronation site on the banks of the Meiße, where the ceremonial crowning takes place. The procession and coronation give the festival a specific sequence of events and a clearly designated riverside location.
MeidoSkydive offers skydiving courses and tandem jumps; spectators are welcome at events. This offers a different focus from swimming, landscape and birdwatching, or the festival tradition. If you are looking for accommodation in Meissendorf, the reason for your stay can help you decide: would you mainly like to spend time by the water, watch nature, experience the heath in bloom or attend the Heath Blossom Festival? If the festival determines your travel dates, check the exact dates. This way, your search can focus on the experiences that matter most during your stay.
