Midlum: Discover the Mill, Nature and History
Accommodation in Midlum
Midlum combines milling history and baking traditions with a fieldstone church, a nature reserve and activities centred around the water.
The mill, baking days and local history
Midlum Mill is a gallery-style Dutch windmill. Built in 1857 with two grain-grinding mills and a roller mill, it is one of the few still-operational windmills of this type in the district of Cuxhaven. Its year of construction, mill type and technical features offer a concrete insight into its history.
You can visit the mill free of charge during the regular mill-baking days. Fresh bread and butter cake from the traditional bakehouse are available to sample. The baking days thus combine a look at the mill with a culinary tradition. If you would like to plan your visit around a baking day, check the current dates in advance.
Another focus of local history is St. Pankratius Church in Midlum: its origins date back to 1150, and it has a lead baptismal font from the 14th century. The local history house focuses on objects from everyday life and work. There you can see numerous craft, household and agricultural objects associated with the people who lived here in the 19th century. The church and local history house thus offer different perspectives: older architectural history and local life in the 19th century.
Nature and water in Midlum
The Hohensteinsforst nature reserve lies within the Midlum cadastral district and covers around 49 hectares. When visiting, please stay on the paths and keep dogs on a leash. These rules help orient everyone wishing to include the protected area in their stay.
Midlum’s spring-water outdoor pool has a playground, two water slides, a kiosk and a swimming area. It invites visitors to splash, swim and use the slides every day. Some operating details may vary by season, so check them before your visit.
Midlum’s water-treading basin offers a different kind of water experience. According to Sebastian Kneipp’s theory, it is intended to provide an opportunity for exercise that is said to promote circulation, relieve varicose veins and help with falling asleep. Midlum therefore offers two distinct options: swimming, splashing and sliding at the outdoor pool, and Kneipp-inspired exercise at the water-treading basin.
More to discover along the Wurster North Sea Coast
The wider Wurster North Sea Coast destination has four green-covered beaches. Historic churches and an unusual museum are also part of this regional setting: the origins of St. George’s Church in Spieka date back to 1319. St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Cappel is known for its 17th-century organ by Arp Schnitger.
In Wremen, the Curious Shell Museum showcases the diversity of nature through more than 3,000 shells and snail shells from around the world. The exhibits are not arranged according to scientific categories; instead, they bear names inspired by playful word inventions and the variety of their shapes.
