Odisheim offers plenty to explore for a trip that combines an interest in garden culture and history within a marshland setting. The MORI Garden brings together a variety of plants, while the St Joost memorial site traces the story back to a medieval pilgrimage chapel. The Hadeln Canal adds another distinctive feature. Botanical impressions, a specific historical story and a connection to the water sit side by side, offering different interests to consider when planning a stay.

The history of St Joost’s Chapel

A memorial stone in Odisheim marks the site of the former St Joost’s Chapel. Stinstedt and Odisheim erected the stone in 1998. The medieval pilgrimage chapel was dedicated to Saint Jodokus and was first mentioned in 1367. Pilgrims from many cities in northern Germany visited it. The chapel was demolished in 1541, after the Reformation. The memorial stone draws attention to the former chapel, while the dates 1367 and 1541 mark the timeline of its history. Anyone who enjoys exploring historic places through their different layers of time will find a clear sequence here: dedication, pilgrimages and remembrance at the former site.

The MORI Garden in the marshland

The MORI Garden is located on the L144 state road in Odisheim, amid the characteristic marshland between the Elbe and Weser rivers, near the Hadeln Canal. Across 10,000 square metres, sun- and shade-loving perennials, rhododendrons and camellias grow alongside a pond and rare trees. The variety of plant groups and the water feature give the garden several distinct aspects to discover on a stroll.

The garden is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Dogs are welcome on a lead. From April to September, the Oste Garden Academy holds monthly gardening advice sessions on site; the MORI Garden is also a venue for the Academy’s open gardening advice sessions. Before travelling, check the current opening hours and session dates, as well as the rules for dogs, since opening arrangements and seasonal offerings may change. Private events are possible by prior arrangement. The garden is also suitable for photo shoots against a flowering backdrop, likewise by prior arrangement.

Gardens, chapel history and the canal

The Hadeln Canal is another concrete leisure option: the fishing stretch runs from Otterndorf via Odisheim to Bad Bederkesa. Public moorings along the canal provide access for fishing. Check locally about access and the applicable fishing regulations. When planning, you can compare different interests: plants and garden design, the history of the chapel, or fishing on the canal. If your travel group has varied interests, you can give these themes different weight when choosing a shared itinerary.
