The Elbe, marshland and local traditions give Drage its own distinctive character. The town is bordered by the Elbe to the north and mainly by the Ilmenau to the south. Agriculture and livestock farming shape the landscape of the Drage Elbe Marsh. This offers various starting points for planning your trip: you can focus on the river landscape, regional culture and rural character.

The Elbe, Elbe beach and traces of the water

Stove Elbe Beach can be up to 100 metres wide and has attracted visitors and tourists for decades. The beach’s expanse provides a striking feature in an area whose landscape is closely connected to the Elbe. The many oxbow lakes are also part of this picture: they bear witness to past dyke breaches and bring the history of water in the landscape to life. The Elbe in the Elbe Marsh offers visitors a wide range of impressions of a river landscape to explore.

If you are travelling with children, you can explore Drage through the themes your family is most interested in: water and landscape, cycling or local culture. This lets you tailor your stay to your own interests without every activity having to follow the same theme.

Local history and culture in the landscape

Stove, a district of Drage, was first documented in 1162. A more recent part of its cultural history is Marschkunst-Kunstmarsch, which was established at the initiative of local artists and craftspeople. The recurring art exhibition takes place in the landscape in Fahrenholz. Art and surroundings are considered together: the exhibition is not separate from the marshland, but takes place within it.

Drager Faslam is also a traditional local celebration. Together with Marschkunst-Kunstmarsch, it offers another way to experience local culture. Those who want to get to know Drage through more than just its river landscape can also explore cultural themes that highlight the town and its traditions.

Agriculture and regional produce

Fruit and vegetables have traditionally been grown along the Elbe dyke. This agricultural character is evident not only in the landscape, but also in regional produce: you can buy fruit directly from producers along the road. The selection at individual outlets may vary. If regional products are part of your trip, shopping directly from producers is one way to experience the agricultural character of the Elbe Marsh through its food, too.

Planning your cycling and journey

The Elbe Cycle Route is recommended for cycling tours along the Elbe near Stove. Bus route 4405 runs through Stove between Winsen and Niedermarschacht. Bus route 5405 runs from Lüneburg to Niedermarschacht. For both connections, it is advisable to check the current timetables before travelling.

In summer, a free Elbe Shuttle with a bicycle trailer runs on weekends from Hamburg-Bergedorf to the region. It provides another option for anyone planning to include a seasonal connection with their bicycle in their trip. Check in advance when the shuttle runs during the current season. The bus routes and the seasonal shuttle differ primarily in their routes and operating times.

Accommodation to suit your travel interests

One specific option for motorhome and caravan travellers is Stover Strand Camping, which has pitches with views of the Elbe. The facilities also include two restaurants and a supermarket. Check the current services and facilities before travelling. These options offer different ways to get to know Drage.
