Historic buildings, trails along the Este and a range of outdoor activities shape ideas for a trip to Hollenstedt. The town’s history stretches from a ring fort dating back to 804 to the sexton’s house from 1669; at the same time, there is a dense network of hiking, cycling and riding trails. You can focus on cultural history or plan more active days.

Church, sexton’s house and ring fort

At the centre of town stands the 1,000-year-old St. Andrew’s Church. Right next to it is the sexton’s house, built in 1669 as a three-bay timber-framed house. The church’s wooden bell tower was renovated in 2001. Together, these buildings offer insights into different historical periods and architectural styles.

Another historic landmark in Hollenstedt is a restored ring fort dating back to 804. Those interested in the town’s history can explore landmarks from different periods: the ring fort, the old church and the 17th-century house. Hollenstedt’s former role has also been recorded: it was once a market and church town between Buxtehude and Tostedt.

Hikes along the Este

Hollenstedt has a dense network of hiking trails. The 10 km Estetal W7 half-day hike starts and ends in Hollenstedt and follows the Este. Its length and classification as a half-day hike give the route a clearly defined time frame.

The Este Ost trail leads to the historic ring fort and crosses two viaducts. Its paths are mostly natural and have no inclines; sturdy footwear is recommended. The route is fully signposted and marked. Nevertheless, check the signs locally before setting off. Compared with Estetal W7, Este Ost stands out for its viaducts, ring fort and the described character of its paths.

The Este Hiking Trail runs from Bötersheim via Hollenstedt and Moisburg to Buxtehude. Nearby, the Alte Burg ring fort site lies about 1.5 km south of Hollenstedt. From the “Am Stinnberg” school car park, it can be reached via the Este Hiking Trail after about 2.5 km.

Cycling, paddling and other activities

There is also a dense network of trails for cyclists and horse riders. Canoe trips on the Este from Hollenstedt to Moisburg and Buxtehude are also possible. Alongside hiking, this gives you other ways to explore the area actively.

Other leisure facilities include an outdoor swimming pool and a tennis centre. The outdoor pool has two 1-metre diving boards and one 3-metre diving board. The tennis centre has indoor and outdoor courts. You can therefore plan around different interests: trails on foot, by bike or on horseback, a canoe trip, or activities at the outdoor pool and tennis court. Each of these options offers a different focus rather than prescribing a single set itinerary.

Hollenstedt can thus be discovered from different perspectives: through the town’s architectural history, a tour along the Este, or a mix of exercise and leisure activities. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which focus matters most for your trip.
