Stelle – between the Elbe riverbank, geest and history
Accommodation in Stelle
Stelle combines the Elbe riverbank, geest landscape and beech mixed forest with visible traces of its history. Nature, local history and leisure offer different ways to spend your stay. When choosing accommodation, it can also help to first consider which of these aspects interests you most: landscape and outdoor activities, historical sites or active pursuits.
Elbe riverbank, geest and Buchwedel
The southern part of Stelle, as well as Ashausen and Büllhorn, lie on the geest at the northern edge of a glacial moraine landscape. Wuhlenburg, Rosenweide and Fliegenberg lie directly on the southern bank of the Elbe. These landscape features give the area different characteristics, from the riverbank to the geest. Buchwedel is a mixed beech forest south of Stelle, with opportunities for walking and recreation. It complements the view of the Elbe with a woodland focus, while the geest highlights the landscape shaped by the Ice Age.
History in the town centre and west of Stelle
The historic centre of Stelle is home to St Michael's Church, built in 1868, a prominent historical feature in the townscape. West of Stelle, Early Bronze Age burial mounds bear witness to prehistoric settlement. The burial mound of Stelle also lies west of the town and is approximately 4,000 years old. The area's history thus ranges from the preserved building in the centre to archaeological traces from a much earlier period.
Hof Behr houses a private museum about the history of the municipality of Stelle. You may need to enquire in advance to visit. If you are interested in the development of the town, the museum offers another way to explore local history, complementing the visible sites in the centre and the prehistoric finds.
Leisure and walks
The outdoor fitness area in Stelle combines street-workout and calisthenics equipment. In summer 2024, it was expanded to include an obstacle wall, a double horizontal ladder, a three-part balance beam, and a leg-raise and pull-up station. Stelle's outdoor swimming pool also attracts visitors and is open seasonally. Check its current opening status before your visit.
The nearby Lower Seeve Lowlands provide regional context: the nature reserve covers around 500 hectares and lies next to Maschen marshalling yard. A footpath around six kilometres long circles the Junkernfeld area. So, alongside the landscapes in Stelle, there is also a clearly described circular route in the surrounding region.
Harburg as the wider setting
The wider Harburg destination includes a varied range of landscapes in Harburg district, such as the Elbe marshes, the Harburg Hills, the northern heath and, above all, the Lüneburg Heath. The district is criss-crossed by an extensive network of cycling routes, including 1,000 kilometres of signposted tourist cycle paths. Opened in 2012, the Heidschnuckenweg runs for 223 kilometres from Hamburg through Harburg, Heidekreis and Celle districts and across more than 30 large and small heathland areas in the northern and southern heath. Its 13 stages offer a hiking experience through the Lüneburg Heath; it is complemented by twelve Heideschleifen trails ranging from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometres.
The route lengths also vary: the footpath around the Junkernfeld is around six kilometres long, while the Heideschleifen trails range from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometres. If you plan your days around outdoor activities, these figures provide a useful guide.
