Burgstemmen tells the story of very different chapters in its history: the more than 1,000-year-old Poppenburg represents the history of medieval castles and transport, while Andrea-Hilse-Park is a landscaped area on a former sand quarry site. Other features include St. Joseph’s Church in the Palas, historic memorial sites and walking paths in and around the village. This gives you the chance to explore Burgstemmen through a range of interests—from architectural history to outdoor activity.

Poppenburg: Several Building Phases and Uses

Only the remains of the castle wall and its gate survive from the early medieval castle complex. The residential wing, dating from the 16th century, forms a right-angled complex with the imposing Palas. The surviving parts therefore reflect different building phases: the history of Poppenburg continued through later forms of use.

The two lower floors of the Palas were combined in 1785 and converted into the Catholic Church of St. Joseph. This conversion added an ecclesiastical use to the history of the castle complex. The carved high altar also has its own chronology: it was created around 1690, acquired in 1773 and came from the dissolved Hildesheim Jesuit College. The building, its conversion and its furnishings point to different periods and make the church’s architectural history a subject in its own right.

The Castle and the Historic Trade Route

In the Middle Ages, Poppenburg’s position on a hill above the Leine crossing gave it control over traffic on the old Hellweg, an important trade route from the Rhineland to central Germany. The castle’s strategic importance can also be understood through its location: alongside its architecture, its connection to a far-reaching transport route shapes its character.

On the Hildesheim–Paderborn route, the Leine was crossed by a bridge or ferry, with an associated toll station. The Hildesheim–Paderborn route was home to a transport and trade hub that was considered important.

Andrea-Hilse-Park and Walking Paths

Andrea-Hilse-Park lies on the southern edge of Burgstemmen. This landscape park covers around 15 hectares on a former sand quarry site. The Hilse family acquired the land and landscaped it as a park. The change from sand extraction to parkland gives Burgstemmen’s landscape history a tangible connection to the area and offers a different focus from the medieval history of the castle and trade.

There are walking paths in and around Burgstemmen. They add an opportunity to include physical activity in your day’s plans alongside the area’s cultural and landscape themes. If you want to combine different interests, walking paths can provide a focus of their own alongside exploring the castle and park.

Historic Details in the Village

Another architectural detail is the wayside cross on Domänenweg. The obelisk, dated 1882, is made of finely worked sandstone, covered with bas-reliefs and topped with a wrought-iron cross. Its form and worked surfaces create a different design accent from the castle complex, with its Palas and right-angled layout.

Historic traces also remain in the Burgstemmen churchyard: alongside mature trees, there are a few historic gravestones, and a war graves cemetery lies on its northern edge. The design of the gravestones and the memorial site thus stand alongside the history of the castle, trade route and church.
