Discover Söhlde: Cultural History and Nature
Accommodation in Söhlde
Söhlde lies between Hildesheim and Braunschweig on the B1 and B444. Cultural history, a circular trail with views of forests and fields, and activities related to dairy sheep farming and cheese add variety to a trip.
Getting here and finding your way
A railway station is located one kilometre outside Hoheneggelsen; the RE50 regional express connects it with Hildesheim, Braunschweig and Wolfsburg. RVHI regional buses also connect the municipality of Söhlde with Hildesheim. This means road and public transport connections offer different options for planning your journey. Check road conditions and the latest RE50 and RVHI timetables before travelling.
Local history at the museum and tower
The Hoheneggelsen Local History Museum in the municipality of Söhlde displays household items, club banners, school supplies, tableware, books on cultural history and documents. Everyday objects sit alongside mementos of club and school life. Among the special exhibits is an almost complete shoemaker’s workshop. The kitchen exhibition includes a kitchen dating from 1910. Exhibits may change, so check what is currently on display before visiting.
Another historic landmark is in Steinbrück: the Kehrwiederturm was built there in 1573 as an additional fortification. An evangelical chapel was also established in the tower. While the museum offers insights into everyday and club history, the tower focuses on architectural history. These different perspectives bring Söhlde’s cultural history to life.
Forests, meadows and changing views
The Mieckenberg circular trail starts at the church in Nettlingen and climbs into the forest. It offers a westward view towards Wöhle. Further along, the trail passes fields and meadows and reaches a viewpoint looking east across the surrounding farmland. The wooded ascent and open spaces alternate, and the viewpoints also differ in the direction they face. Views depend on the season and weather.
Farm activities and indoor swimming pool
Hof im Greth in Söhlde offers a guided tour of its dairy sheep farm followed by a sheep’s cheese tasting. It also offers a cheesemaking course and has a farm shop. Check dates and availability in advance. Söhlde’s small indoor swimming pool has a movable floor that can be used to set different water depths. If you plan to visit, check whether the pool is currently open.
Local attractions thus range from collections and architectural history to a route through forests and farmland, as well as farm activities and the swimming pool. This keeps your choice of destination focused on the specific interests of your trip, rather than on a particular type of accommodation alone.
A distinctive cultural highlight within the wider destination of Hildesheim
Looking beyond Söhlde to the wider destination of Hildesheim reveals further distinctive architectural and museum themes. The Fagus Factory in Alfeld is considered the first truly modern building and the seminal work of modern industrial architecture. It houses a UNESCO Visitor Centre with interactive exhibits on the history of the World Heritage Site and the core ideas of the World Heritage Convention. St. Michael’s Church in Hildesheim is a three-aisled basilica in the Ottonian, pre-Romanesque or early Romanesque style. Together with Hildesheim Cathedral, the church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. This makes it possible to distinguish Söhlde’s local focus on its museum, tower and landscape from the wider destination of Hildesheim’s distinct architectural and World Heritage focus.
