Elze combines a distinctive city history with a special stop for cyclists. The local history museum in the former lower mill, Wittenburg Church and the rest & bike facility on the Saale each offer something different. During your stay, you can focus on historical sites and a riverside cycling break as two specific highlights.

City History Between Mill and Fire

Since 1987, the local history museum has been housed in the former lower mill on MĂĽhlenstraĂźe and presents changing exhibitions. The intact old mill can be visited by prior arrangement.

A defining moment was the city fire of 1824, which destroyed 258 buildings and Elze’s church. The event gave Elze the nickname “City of Fires” — a concise name for a pivotal chapter in the city’s history.

Church, Guided Tours and Getting Around

In Elze’s Wittenburg district, Wittenburg Church was completed in 1497. Its west church is once again available to the congregation and visitors. In Elze, you can encounter a range of historical traces, from the former mill site to a church building with a precisely dated history.

On a guided city tour, a trained guide shows you places of interest in Elze and explains their history. City tours are available by prior arrangement. If you plan to take a tour and visit the old mill, you should make the necessary arrangements for both.

For road directions, note that Elze lies at the intersection of Federal Highways 1 and 3.

A Cycling Break on the Saale

The rest & bike facility is right next to the Leine-Heide Cycle Route. It includes a pebble beach and a wooden deck beside the Saale. A barefoot path is designed for cyclists who want to refresh their feet before the next stage. This makes the spot a place to enjoy a cycling break in several ways, from spending time by the river to taking a short barefoot walk.

The 413-kilometre Leine-Heide Cycle Route links the Leinebergland, the LĂĽneburg Heath and Hamburg. This brings two different scales together: the rest & bike facility as a specific place to take a break, and the cycle route as a connection across wider landscapes and all the way to Hamburg.

More to Explore in the Wider Hildesheim Destination

The wider Hildesheim destination complements Elze’s local history with its own cultural and landscape highlights. The Hildesheim region lies between the Hildesheim Börde, the Leinebergland and the foothills of the Harz Mountains; cyclists can enjoy almost 500 kilometres of cycle routes there.

In Hildesheim itself, the Cathedral of St. Mary houses the Bernward Doors, a masterpiece of bronze casting. The Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Michael’s Church were jointly added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. St. Michael’s features a monumental 13th-century ceiling painting: spread across 1,300 oak boards, it depicts the family tree of Christ. The Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum in Hildesheim is also home to the world’s second-largest Egyptian collection. Since December 2025, visitors have been able to explore objects from 4,000 years of ancient Egyptian culture at interactive multimedia stations in the newly opened permanent Egyptian exhibition; the exhibition is family-friendly and designed to be an engaging experience.

Another cultural highlight in the wider Hildesheim destination is the Fagus Factory in Alfeld. It is considered the first truly modern building and the pioneering work of modern industrial architecture. The factory houses a UNESCO Visitor Centre with interactive stations about the history of the World Heritage Site and the core ideas of the World Heritage Convention.
