Holzminden combines an unusual focus on scents with city history and cycling routes: At Sensoria, smell and taste come together in an exhibition and outdoors on the roof; scent markers also lead through the city. The town is also located right on the Weser Cycle Path.

Scents in the Exhibition and the City

Sensoria – House of Scents and Flavours is Europe’s first interactive museum dedicated to smell and taste. The exhibition spans three floors and 600 square metres, is divided into ten themed areas and lets visitors experience up to 60 different scents. It is suitable for all ages and offers families a shared theme that different age groups can explore in their own way.

On the roof, fragrant herbs, unusual plants and an interactive quiz invite visitors to experience the world of scents and flavours outdoors with all their senses. This offers a different focus from the exhibition’s themed areas: here, plants, scent and a quiz provide an entry point to the subject.

The Scented City Walk offers another perspective. Its 17 scent markers lead to important buildings and attractive squares in Holzminden, sharing insights into the city’s history and the significance of scents and flavours. Historic architecture and charming old-town lanes also shape the cityscape. You can choose between the museum experience and a walk that connects scent themes with the city’s history and places.

Cycling and Routes in Holzminden

Holzminden is located right on the Weser Cycle Path, where the route crosses the EuroVelo Route R1. The bicycle parking facility at Johannismarkt is also right on the Weser Cycle Path and just a few steps from the city centre. It offers cycle tourists a convenient and secure place to leave their bikes during a stopover.

Mountain biking is another activity described in Holzminden: varied routes and challenging trails in the forest-rich Solling-Vogler Nature Park offer opportunities to enjoy nature. Trail conditions may vary. This means there are different cycling options to consider: the two named cycle routes on the one hand, and mountain bike routes and trails on the other.

Flavours and Local Themes

The regularly held “Colourful Market of Scents and Flavours” offers an aromatic taste experience, with many tasting stalls. If you would like to plan your stay around the market, check the specific dates. Scents and flavours seminars include the opportunity to create your own perfume. Dates and availability may vary here, too; check the specific schedule if the seminar is important to your trip.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Holzminden station is served by NordWestBahn and is about a ten-minute walk from the city centre. Bus routes 501, 502 and 509 operate within the city. Check current travel information before setting out, especially if you plan to use buses.

When looking for accommodation in Holzminden, use your plans as a guide: are Sensoria and city history your main focus, or would you rather spend most of your time cycling? The market and seminars can also shape your stay, provided the dates work out. When choosing accommodation, consider its location in relation to the routes that matter for your own plans each day.

In the Wider Holzminden Destination

Beyond the town of Holzminden, the wider Holzminden destination includes distinct places with other themes. In Polle, the castle ruins stand on a hilltop about 25 metres above the municipality in the Weser Valley. The FĂĽrstenberg Castle Museum presents porcelain from more than 265 years of the FĂśRSTENBERG porcelain manufactory. The grounds include a viewing platform 80 metres above the Weser, with panoramic views of the Weser Valley and the tri-border region.

Bevern Castle is a four-winged Renaissance complex built between 1603 and 1612 around a square courtyard with a moat, two bridges and a castle garden. In Delligsen-Grünenplan, the Glass Museum traces the glassworks’ development from its founding in 1744 to modern production by Deutsche Spezialglas AG. Tools, glass products and photographs illustrate the production processes. Visitors also learn how glassblowers and glassworks workers used to live and what unusual role canaries played in Grünenplan.
