Explore Stadtoldendorf through traces of its medieval fortifications, churches and literary memorial sites. There is also a cultural history tour and a section of the EuroVelo Route R1. You can shape your stay around different interests, from local history to cycling.

Town Wall and Försterberg Tower

Around 800 metres of the original historic town wall remain in the old town. Försterberg Tower dates from the second half of the 13th century and served as a watchtower for the particularly vulnerable north-eastern section of the town’s fortifications. The historic wall was interrupted by the Hagentor, Burgtor and Teichtor gates. The remains of the wall, the tower and the gates offer tangible clues for understanding the former fortifications as you walk around the town.

The cultural history tour covers 30 stops. Information boards with QR codes link to the online version of the tour, which indicates which sights are accessible to people with mobility impairments. Check the conditions at each stop before your visit.

Churches, Literature and Memorial Sites

St. Dionysius, St. Kilian and St. Sebastian Church was consecrated in 1800 and extended with a choir in 1869. St. Dionys is also on the Loccum–Volkenroda pilgrimage route and offers a place to pause and refresh; local hospitality options may vary. The church and its architectural history are thus linked to a pilgrimage route that passes through Stadtoldendorf.

A Wilhelm Raabe walking tour introduces places associated with his works, as well as Raabe House, his former home in Stadtoldendorf. Fountains are also among the stops on a town tour: visitors see the La Montagne Friendship Fountain and the sandstone Jule Johler Fountain. At the site of the former synagogue, a memorial stone erected by the town in 1981 commemorates the history of this place.

More cultural destinations in the wider Holzminden destination

The wider Holzminden destination also has cultural attractions of its own. Bevern Castle is a four-winged Renaissance complex built between 1603 and 1612 around a square courtyard with a moat, two bridges and a castle garden. The FĂĽrstenberg Castle Museum displays porcelain spanning more than 265 years of the FĂśRSTENBERG porcelain manufactory. The castle complex includes a viewing platform 80 metres above the Weser, with panoramic views of the Weser Valley and the three-country border region.

Sensoria in Holzminden is Europe’s first interactive museum dedicated to smell and taste. It covers 600 square metres and has ten themed areas. The Grünenplan Glass Museum traces the glassworks’ development from its founding in 1744 through to modern production at Deutsche Spezialglas AG. Tools, glass products and photographs explain the production processes; the museum also explores the everyday lives of glassblowers and glassworks workers, as well as the unusual role of canaries in Grünenplan.
