Georgsmarienhütte combines outdoor experiences with physical activity and industrial history. The wooded ridges of the Teutoburg Forest border the town directly. At the same time, Villa Stahmer offers an insight into the town’s steelmaking history, while parks and trails provide other perspectives. For your stay, you can choose between hikes, themed walks and a visit focused on history.

Kasinopark and the Teutoburg Forest

Laid out in 1872, Kasinopark is home to around 50 different exotic and native tree species. This mix gives the park its own character and makes it a distinctive nature destination in Georgsmarienhütte. There is a footbath at Holsteteich pond. In Kasinopark, tree diversity sits alongside a special spot by the water. The wooded ridges of the Teutoburg Forest border the town directly, and the landscape shapes the view of Georgsmarienhütte. Another viewpoint is the bistro terrace at the outdoor pool in Panoramabad Georgsmarienhütte, which looks out over the panorama of the Teutoburg Forest.

Hiking trails and cultural routes

Five well-marked TERRA.tracks run through the town. They were created in cooperation with the TERRA.vita Nature and UNESCO Geopark and are suitable for different fitness levels and hiking distances. This lets you choose a route to suit your preferred distance and level of challenge. Check the latest information about the TERRA.tracks before setting out on a specific hike.

Cultural routes offer another way to explore the districts of Kloster Oesede, Holzhausen, Harderberg, Dröper and Holsten-Mündrup. They can be explored on foot or by bike, with no admission fee. The cultural route in Holzhausen is a suggested circular route of around seven kilometres. Ten information boards explain the district’s history. While the TERRA.tracks cater to different fitness levels and hiking distances, the Holzhausen circular route combines a set distance with a historical theme.

Villa Stahmer and the history of steelmaking

Villa Stahmer houses the Museum of the City of Georgsmarienhütte. Its main focus is the city’s steelmaking history; an exhibition on the first floor tells the story of the ironworks. Construction began in 1856, when a joint-stock company was founded with financial support from King George V and his wife Marie. A museum visit thus takes you from the city’s history back to the beginnings of the ironworks.

Robert Stahmer is also connected with the villa: he took up residence there in 1900, close to his railway signal works in Oesede. The villa is one of the most beautiful houses in the district of Osnabrück. For a history-focused stay, it offers a look at both the steel industry and the building itself, as well as its historical connection to Stahmer.

Plan your stay around your interests

Would you prefer to explore the city’s history and industry, or set aside more time for hiking and cultural routes? You can also combine the two: the museums and trails appeal to different interests. Choose accommodation to suit which side of Georgsmarienhütte you’d like to experience during your stay.
