Discover Fürstenau: Castle Island and the City’s History
Accommodation in Fürstenau
Fürstenau’s history is centred on Castle Island, with its distinctive former castle tower, and the historic town centre. There are also signposted routes and different ways to explore the town: independently using audio stations, on a town rally, or on a guided tour by request. This lets you tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to experience architectural history or also explore the routes on foot and by bike.
Castle Island, the Castle and the Town’s History
Fürstenau Castle was built as a border castle in the 14th century and expanded into a fortress in the Renaissance style from 1527 onwards. This development brings the historical transformation to life: the castle did not retain its original function, but was later expanded into a fortress. Castle Island, with its distinctive former castle tower, is a landmark of Fürstenau and a prominent point of reference as you learn about this history.
A special architectural feature is the northeast bastion of the former fortress. It is a Dürer-style round bastion, unique of its kind in the Osnabrück region. Schloss Fürstenau’s south wing is also home to the Catholic parish church of St. Catherine. Its location within the castle adds a religious dimension to the site, while the bastion is a reminder of its fortress architecture.
If you would like to explore the castle and Old Town together, you can book guided tours by request. These take in the historic town centre, with its churches and half-timbered houses, as well as the castle. The tour also follows paths once used by former residents of the town, passing points of interest along the way.
Explore the Town Centre Your Own Way
On the historic paths through Fürstenau’s history, you can follow audio stations and listen to stories at your own pace. The town rally offers a different focus: you explore the historic town centre and answer questions along the way. You can choose whether you would rather follow the stories at the stations or actively engage with the rally’s questions.
With a halberd and horn, the Fürstenau night watchman leads visitors by lantern light from the castle grounds through the historic town centre. Along the way, he tells spooky, funny and true stories. While the town rally poses questions, the night watchman focuses on stories—two different ways to discover the town’s history.
Signposted Routes and a Cycling Tour
The Fürstenau local history association has signposted the Vorstenower Patt and the Mühlenweg, both starting and ending at Fürstenau Market Square. The square is therefore a shared starting and finishing point for both routes. If you’re planning a longer bike ride, the approximately 26 km “Sachte an” cycling tour passes through the Samtgemeinde Fürstenau. On the way back, it follows the Mühlenteich and passes the Bojemühle before reaching Fürstenau’s historic Old Town.
The routes from the market square and the cycling tour mainly differ in their layout: for the signposted routes, the square is given as the start and end point, while “Sachte an” is described as a route of approximately 26 km through the Samtgemeinde. Route conditions may change; check the current route before setting out.
More Activities Nearby
North of Fürstenau, near the German border with the Netherlands, is Fursten Forest. Quad, buggy and jeep tours are offered there, as well as paintball, go-karting and laser tag. Go-karting and laser tag are available from age ten—a specific age requirement that may be helpful when planning with children. Operators and availability may change, so check whether the activities are currently on offer before visiting.
When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: do you want Castle Island, the church and the historic Old Town to shape your stay, or would you also like to make time for the signposted routes and cycling tour? This will help you focus your accommodation search on the experiences that interest you in Fürstenau.
