Garbsen combines a touch of industrial heritage with cycling and water activities. The Mittelland Canal crosses the city for around 1.6 kilometres; the local history museum tells the story of the formerly rural communities and local industrial history. Nearby, Lake Blaue See adds sandy beaches and water sports to the picture. When looking for accommodation, you can ask yourself whether local history, cycling or a day by the water will be the focus of your trip.

The Canal and the Garbsen Cycling Ring

The Garbsen Cycling Ring is signposted as the city’s official cycling route. It invites you to discover Garbsen’s urban and rural landscapes and stop at sights along the way. For cycling travellers, the ring offers a specific reason to include city views, scenery and possible stops in their plans. It is worth checking the local signs before setting off.

The Mittelland Canal also helps define Garbsen’s layout: it crosses the city for around 1.6 kilometres. Together with the cycling ring, it creates a contrast between a clearly defined waterside landscape and a route that takes in both urban and rural scenery. Both can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Local History Museum and Historic Buildings

The Garbsen Local History Museum is housed in the workers’ kitchen of a former brickworks. The exhibition venue itself therefore points to the industrial history covered by the museum. It traces the development of the ten formerly rural communities that make up the present-day city of Garbsen. Another focus is the history of the brick and hard-stone industries, which played a central role in Garbsen from 1875 to 1980. The development of today’s city and the area’s industrial character are thus at the heart of the museum.

Garbsen’s architectural heritage can also be found beyond the museum. Built in 1895 and restored, the Leine Bridge in Schloß Ricklingen is now considered an industrial monument. Schloß Ricklingen is also home to a magnificent Baroque church, considered unique in certain respects in northern Germany. The bridge and the church offer a different perspective on history from the exhibition at the local history museum: here, the architecture itself gives each its distinctive character.

Leisure at Lake Blaue See and a Seasonal Highlight

At the Lake Blaue See recreation area in Garbsen, the adventure mini-golf course has 14 holes spread across the gently sloping terrain along the lakeshore. Lake Blaue See near Garbsen also has a 600-metre sandy beach, water-ski lifts and a 65-metre water slide. There is something for different interests by the water: a round of mini golf, the beach, water skiing or the slide. When choosing your accommodation, you can weigh these leisure activities against the cultural attractions and local history, and consider which will be the deciding factor for your trip.

The traditional Matjes Festival takes place in June at Werner-Baesmann-Park in Berenbostel. The festival adds a seasonal event with a specific month to the area’s excursions and cultural attractions. If you are planning when to travel, you can make this June event a focus of your visit.

Further Perspectives in the Hanover Region

The Hanover Region offers further attractions, each with its own distinct character. The Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover comprise the Great Garden, the Berggarten, the Georgengarten and the Welfengarten. The Berggarten developed from a vegetable and propagation garden into a botanical garden. The region therefore also offers gardens with their own history and a variety of individual features.

Lake Steinhude is the largest inland body of water in northwestern Germany and is particularly well known for its excellent water sports and holiday opportunities. In Mardorf, a state-recognised resort, a five-kilometre lakeside path invites visitors to take a walk. This offers a different focus for planning than Garbsen’s industrial heritage: one option centres on water and water sports, the other on the lakeside path in Mardorf.
