Lehrte combines outdoor activity with discoveries of nature and local history. Sixteen discovery tours take you through Lehrte and its districts. You can explore them on foot, by bicycle or by car. This lets you tailor your stay to your own interests: a longer route, gardens and plants, or traces of history.

Compare Discovery Tours and Routes

Two routes differ considerably in length and theme. “Bodies of Water in and around Lehrte” is a family cycling tour through nature, around 60 kilometres long. It can be done in stages, using several railway stations along the way. “On the Trail of the Storks” covers about 20 kilometres and leads to stork nests in several of Lehrte’s districts and in Lehrte itself. The longer water route therefore focuses on distance and planning stages, while the shorter route has the nests as its specific destination. Both distances are approximate and provide a guide for your planning.

To prepare, you can start the Lehrte tours in Komoot, download them as GPX files or print them as PDFs. QR stations along the tours provide information about buildings, monuments, churches and Stolpersteine (stumbling stones). This means exploring outdoors also offers insights into local history. Check the current route version before setting out.

Gardens, Parks and Lehrte’s History

Hohnhorst Park covers around 28 hectares and combines nature, culture and recreational sports. For a different, botanical perspective, visit the medicinal herb garden in the grounds of Lehrte Hospital. It opened in spring 2009 as a Garden Region project. Around 200 medicinal plants grow on a 240-square-metre mound. The plants may change; check access arrangements before your visit.

The town’s buildings also bear traces of history: between 2000 and 2011, 30 historically significant buildings in Lehrte received bronze plaques. The Stolpersteine are a distinctive form of remembrance. In 2012, 21 Stolpersteine were laid in Lehrte to commemorate people who were driven from their homes during the Nazi era. Together with the information about the Stolpersteine at the QR stations, these places of remembrance make history a tangible part of your exploration.

Gardens and Water in the Hanover Region

Other places in the Hanover Region have their own highlights. The Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover comprise the Great Garden, the Berggarten, the Georgengarten and the Welfengarten. The Berggarten, located in Herrenhausen, developed from a vegetable and nursery garden into a botanical garden. For travellers interested in gardens as well as local history, these four garden areas offer different perspectives on designed landscapes.

The Steinhuder Meer, the largest inland body of water in north-western Germany, offers a different focus. It is best known for its water sports and holiday opportunities. In Mardorf, a state-recognised resort, a five-kilometre lakeside path invites you to take a walk. So, in the Hanover Region, you can choose from Lehrte’s discovery tours, garden attractions and experiences by the water.
