Steinhude
Accommodation in Steinhude
Steinhude combines half-timbered buildings and fishing history with walks on Lake Steinhude. In the historic center, you can discover reminders of the area’s fishing and weaving traditions; the lakeside promenade offers a different view of the town. When planning your visit, you can choose between exploring local history and spending time by the water.
Half-timbered buildings, fishing, and weaving
Steinhude’s historic center brings its fishing and weaving heritage to life through fishing nets, fish traps, boats, peat barges, the Fishing and Weaving Museum, and a historic linen mangle. These objects and institutions provide tangible connections to both traditions: fishing is represented by equipment and watercraft, while weaving is also reflected in the processing of linen. The museum brings both subjects together in its name.
Barn Quarter and lakeside promenade
The Barn Quarter reveals another side of the historic townscape. Its restored half-timbered barns date from the 18th century and were renovated for Expo 2000. Today, they house the Tourist Information Office, the Nature Park Barn, restaurants, small shops, and the exhibition space of the Art Barn. The quarter thus combines historic buildings with a range of present-day uses: information, nature park exhibits, places to eat, small shops, and an exhibition all have a place here.
The lakeside promenade adds a scenic dimension. You can walk along Lake Steinhude and enjoy views of the sunset. While the barns put history and present-day uses in the spotlight, a walk by the water offers a different impression of Steinhude. This contrast can help when planning your trip: would you like to spend more time exploring historic townscapes and exhibitions, or include the promenade and views across the lake?
More perspectives in the wider destination of Wunstorf
The wider destination of Wunstorf also has its own cultural highlights. Three self-guided circular walks each take about 20 minutes and start and end at the town hall. Two lead through the old town, and one goes up to the Stiftshügel. Their approximate duration and different routes offer a clear choice between two walks through the old town and one up to Stiftshügel. Wunstorf’s historic urban spaces thus complement the fishing and weaving history you can discover in Steinhude.
The exhibition of the Traditionsgemeinschaft Lufttransport Wunstorf e.V. offers another perspective. It is located in the Ju-52 hangar and on the adjacent open-air grounds, right next to Wunstorf Air Base, and is open to everyone. The focus is a Junkers Ju-52, one of the last examples in the world in original condition. Together with the German Air Force’s Air Transport Wing 62, the exhibition presents an overview of the history of air transport and Wunstorf Air Base, as well as additional aviation exhibits. The Ju-52 hangar and outdoor areas are accessible without barriers; this does not apply to the interior of the Transall.
