Wunstorf: Old Town, Aviation History and the Aue
Accommodation in Wunstorf
The old town, air transport history and the Aue meadows offer different perspectives on Wunstorf. You can discover the city on foot, through its cultural programme or by exploring its river landscape. What you want to shape your stay can also influence your choice of accommodation.
Walking tours and historic townscape
Three self-guided walking tours start and end at the town hall, and each takes about 20 minutes. Two lead through the old town, while one goes to Stiftsberg. For a short stroll, you can choose between the historic town centre and Stiftsberg as different focal points. Guided tours take in other sights: they lead through the historic town centre and the restored Wasserzucht, and visit the abbey, the Ratskeller and other attractions.
The abbey and the many renovated half-timbered houses on Wasserzucht Lane in the town centre form an ensemble that gives Wunstorf its distinctive character. The pedestrian zone combines historic charm with modern variety. The collegiate church adds its own architectural accent: it is one of Lower Saxony’s most significant late Romanesque church buildings.
Culture at the abbey and market square
The extensively renovated 15th-century abbey is Wunstorf’s cultural centre. Its ground-floor hall hosts exhibitions, readings, concerts, receptions and lectures for up to 100 people. Groups can book city tours, tower climbs and special tours for a date of their choice; arrange your visit in advance.
The town church on the market square is open to visitors Tuesday to Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. Opening hours may change, so check the details before your visit. Together, the walking tours and the abbey give you a variety of reasons to set aside time in the town centre for architecture, local history or an event.
Air transport history at the Ju 52 Hall
The Traditionsgemeinschaft Lufttransport Wunstorf e.V. (Wunstorf Air Transport Heritage Association) runs an exhibition of military history objects in the Ju 52 Hall and on the adjacent outdoor grounds, right next to Wunstorf Air Base. It is open to everyone. At its centre is a Junkers Ju 52, one of the last examples in the world in its original condition. Together with the German Air Force’s Air Transport Wing 62, the exhibition presents an overview of the history of air transport and Wunstorf Air Base, along with additional aviation exhibits.
The hall and outdoor areas are accessible without steps. The interior of the Transall is an exception. A visit offers a glimpse into aviation history through tangible exhibits at an exhibition site right next to the air base.
Aue meadows, waterways and getting there
The Aue, a branch of the Leine, flows through Wunstorf and shapes the landscape with its meadows. It is navigable from Wunstorf year-round, with some sections requiring boats to be hauled along the bank. Water levels and safety conditions can vary; check them before planning a trip. Walks around the city and an outing by the water offer different ways to explore without having to limit yourself to just one.
Wunstorf is about 20 kilometres northwest of Hanover and can be reached via the A 2 motorway, the B 441 and B 442 federal highways, and by train.
