Gehrden brings together views, landscaped parks, historic buildings and walking trails. In clear weather, the view from the Burgbergturm stretches across the Calenberger Land as far as Lake Steinhude; on the market square, public art and open-air concerts come together. The parks also each have their own character. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on the landscape, outdoor activities, architecture or local history.

Parks with their own character

The Trip’sche Park combines Baroque elements with features of an English landscape garden. A broad staircase and Italian-style terraces are part of its design; from the terraces, views open up towards the Calenberger Land and the Deister hills. Here, architecture and landscape gardening are equally central.

The origins of Ottomar-von-Reden-Park date back to 1590. Parts of the park, including areas with trees that are in some cases centuries old, are protected as historic monuments. The two parks thus offer different perspectives: the Trip’sche Park combines different garden styles, while Ottomar-von-Reden-Park stands out for its long history and protected areas.

Architectural history and culture

The Gehrden Town Museum was established in 1975 in a former brewery dating from 1665. The building’s history therefore predates the museum. The Margarethenkirche also reflects its architectural history: its tower dates from the early 13th century, and it is considered Gehrden’s oldest building.

The Burgbergturm was built in 1897/1898 within a refuge fort attributed to the Cherusci. Today, it is an observation tower on the Gehrdener Berg. In clear weather, the view stretches across the Calenberger Land towards Lake Steinhude.

The market square offers another distinctive cultural feature. A 2025 description presents the Sonnenweg as an urban art trail, with around 45 paving slabs featuring sun motifs and a historic sundial on Gehrden’s market square. Open-air concerts on the market square are also part of the local cultural scene. Public art and music add further themes to consider when planning a trip, alongside the historic buildings and parks.

Walking trails, routes and cycling tours

Gehrden offers several hiking options. The established Kansteinweg passes through the town, and Gehrden also lies on an outer loop of the Grüner Ring. These trails provide a focus of their own alongside the town’s cultural and historical attractions. Ottomar-von-Reden-Park is also connected to RegionsRoute 3, the outer loop of the Grüner Ring between Ronnenberg and Gehrden. If you’re considering this route for a cycling tour, check the waymarkers before setting off.

For an outing with a particular focus on design and public art, the Sonnenweg offers a different starting point from the hiking trails. The Kansteinweg passes through Gehrden; RegionsRoute 3 is the outer loop of the GrĂĽner Ring between Ronnenberg and Gehrden. The route that best suits your plans depends on whether you want to focus on walking or cycling.

Plan your stay around your interests

Walking trails and views offer a different focus from park design, architectural history and culture. The town museum, the Margarethenkirche and the two parks offer concrete starting points; the Burgbergturm adds views across the landscape.
